My picks are Cancellara (solo), Degenkolb (small group sprint) or Stybar (early escape) depending on how race develops

And watch out for Guillaume Van Keirsbulck, he's the next deadly pretty boy of Belgian cycling.

my boring pick for what should be an exciting race:
1. Sagan
2. Cance
3. Boonen

The cream rises to the top this year.

I am taking Cancellara because of his MSR finish.

Dark horse...Gilbert.

Cancellara, but I'd love to see Boonen take it.

Stybar, Sagan, Boonen. I am thinking Cancellara is getting just over the hump of age and still being marked as a favourite will be too much. Boonen has had a bad last season and has something to prove but a thumb injury and personal tragedy might be too much. Sagan I think still wastes energy and does stuff he shouldn't but he is so strong. Stybar because someone else said so.

GvK wins dePanne.

Keith - pretty sure Gilbert is done with cobbles

His form looked good in MSR, crap tactic not withstanding. I am surprised he is sitting it out.

And GvK only won because Terpstra broke a pedal. Terpstra...been saying it since December. He is in superb form.

I think at some point he had some drive to win a flemish classic on top of the walloon stuff he's good at but that drive is long gone. now he'll be happy if he wins any classic and he's focusing on the ones he's good at close to home.

same as discussions we had on the old forum on Cance winning LBL - hahaha.

You are right on Terpstra's bad luck but the kid's there nonetheless.

@KR: Ha, guess I should have checked the start list... Although I'm with you thinking that Terpstra has a good chance to get it, I would love see another classic (in both senses of the word) Boonen vs. Cancellara clash of the titans.

When I saw his sprinting form in MSR, I knew what time it was for Flanders.

Not sure what happened with Sagan today but he was clearly frustrated by lack of team support and being outnumbered.

I agree that Sagan ended up in a bad position due to his lack of teammates in the finale. I think he rode as best he could considering the circumstances. OPQS had the tactics right but the wrong personnel. They needed Terpstra in that late break.

Well crap... finally got to see a little racing and my internet connection blew up about 45 minutes before the race ended (jeez I need to get back to civilization). Sounds like a hell of a finish and hat tip to Keith - he called it.

A little disappointed with Sagan (though probably not as disappointed as HE is) - thought he'd run a little better than that. In my minds eye I had him in the final selection and, if not winning, being a big part of making the race.

I had two of the three riders I. The podium, plus picking Fabian for the win. Boonen let me down....

I'm thinking I am gonna roll with the same three next weekend, though....

My internet streaming was bad, too.
Bein replayed that last 55k a few hours after the race, with a long commercial break that blacked out the last time up that big next-to-last climb. Back from commercial, Canc is up the road with total mayhem behind. WTF kind of coverage is that?

I had to go streaming shopping.

I really preferred Magnus Backstedt's commentary to Sean Kelly's, but the feed was terrible so I had to go with Eurosport.

Sep ain't faking...but after 250k+, nobody is faking!

As was said of MSR, at the end of 300k the sprint is sort of wobbly… those legs have got to be fried before they even start winding up that last 500m or so

I think Cance knew that if it came down to a sprint at speed, Sep might be able to overhaul him. That's why he waited as long as he possibly could and checked with DS how far the pursuers were behind. Smart play on soggy legs.

I had about 10 tries before I got a descent Sporza feed. I quit the Eurosport one after first commercial break...can't have commercial breaks in cycling or soccer coverage...anyone should now that.

I agree with OC. I do not think FC was the strongest one at the end of the race, but tactical nous got it for him. You got to have a LOT of self confidence to let such big a gap develop so close to the end of the race so that your apparently strongest competitor (Sep struck may as the one with the most gas left) will burn his matches to close it...

But Cancellara had another ace up his sleeve. As part of his preparation for the 2014 spring classics, Trek general manager Luca Guercilena implemented specific sprint training to give him an added dimension.

After watching Cancellara come so tantalizingly close so many times, Guercilena knew they needed to add some speed work to complement his power. Guercilena put Cancellara through sprint interval training, designed to increase his finishing speed after a long, hard effort.
