Hard to say; with headwind there's a lot of energy being expended by those in lead. Belkin have numbers in the chase.

I don't think the race is over till Fabian and Sep put on the afterburners. I'm just wondering how long they'll wait. Boom is also looking good.

time differences are small; that headwind is really tricky tactically today.

NOW the race has started.

Eurosport coverage. surprised that Lemond has a terrible TV presence, stumbling and barely coherent. Flecha is really good even if English isn't his first language.

Two observations

The feud between Canc and Segan goes on. Segan wouldn't work when they had that gap and in the end it cost them both. Segan is not making any friends out there and sometimes you need friends to win a bike race.

BMC can't be happy with how it ended. They looked like a really strong team with a plan. They got zero out of it.

The team that should be least happy is Belkin. They got zip out of their numerical presence.

Terpstra will quickly have to work on his interview skills with his new found status.

+1 Jacques, Lemond was painful to watch. Canc and Sagan could have worked that group good, but I also think no one wanted to work to bring Degenkolb to the front, I was surprised to see the nonchalance of Cancellara at one point, no sense of urgency when time was running out. Not impressed with Sagan, dude needs to get over himself
Hushovd has to be disappointed for sure Ride On, he was in the select group, looking strong, etc...

Ride On, that will hurt Sagan in the future, maybe for years. Fostering goodwill among your competitors is always smart. You never know when you might need to draw on that account. Lemond sacrificing his P-R to help a rider who helped him win the Tour two years before. Score one for Lasalle who sacrificed a great shot at a Tour stage win. And of course, that AC guy who seems to pick up helping friends all over the place. Reaping the rewards of years of small favors perhaps?

Ride On - I don't think so; they ditched the liability and still have highly succesful womens cycling (Vos & Co), cyclocross (Vanderhaar & Co) and junior development.

And don't forget, they still sponsor one of the most succesful and best looking sports teams in the world :-)

And an aero road lid....another win for aerodynamics.

Great race by OPQS....played it perfectly. FCC was hurt by the lack of team support in the end. I'll add that my picks were spot-on......well, except for the guys who finished 1st and 2nd in reforming of them.

Between a Roubaix and a Venge for P-R, I'd chose a Roubaix every time.

Wiggo ride a great race today....very impressive.

I would like to pat myself on the back for hanging in there on my Terpstra pick. I have been saying all spring that if he got in a tactical finale with OPQS teammates, he would get a major win and I was right.

Degenkolb was my dark horse pick along with Kristoff, so I was happy with his finish as well.

Mad props to Wiggo. Dude came correctly to P-R.

Totally agree - Wiggins did fine work. I am surprised he didn't shoot for it when they didn't chase Terpstra. He did very well and I had a "feeling" he would. He gained some respect points in my eyes.

Also, I get why Canc didn't want to drag Degenkolb to the finish but surprised Belkin and Sky didn't really press it because they could have shut it down.

Who knows, it's a long race, the dynamics with 2 other QS folks in the bunch made them have a tactical advantage...Hard to quarterback when that is one tough race. But that's part of the fun as a fan I suppose!

The headwind was a beast, judging by the flags out on the course. Several guys in the finale said sitting on the front was horrible and made chasing just something that, after 250k, most of the guys just didn't have the legs to do.

And how about Boonen throwing himself into the headwind time and time again? Brave and bold? Part of the team strategy? Just plain nuts?

Boonen looked mystified because the usual play in PR is that if you are in the front, you work because you never know what bad things will happen to your rivals behind. The gap crept up to 45 seconds and looked like it was about to snap but Hushovd and then Thomas stopped working.

Those guys were knackered cuz no one made any sort of play to catch Terpstra. He left and it was like everyone said "well played. let's go have a beer."

David Millar was so knackered he initially just did one lap on the velodrome. Five minutes later he realized he had to do two laps and finished the race; otherwise he would have scored a DNF.

My read on Boonen was that he wanted to leave the bad taste of season behind him and make a mark on the race, arguably his last chance to make a major mark this year. But the conditions weren't favorable, his moves while great to watch were a bit cowboy style, and he wasn't a happy camper in the race or post-race. If it hadn't been for family circumstances, this season had so much promise for him and started so well.

If he did 2 laps, he did 1/2 lap more than necessary.....it is only 1.5 laps after they enter the velodrome.
