Quintana to rescue from Froome GT boredom with his pure climbing ability.
The class of 1990 is the best to come around in a long time with now Quintana and Aru added to that list.
Really, there's nothing on race neutralization in the UCI rule book aside from the railroad crossing workaround? Really? |

We learned to watch Aru for the future.
We also learned the Italians need better crowd control on the major climbs. |

I'm still not certain Quintana is the real deal yet....at least as far as it pertains to July.
He lost time on key stages when he shouldn't have and was laregly a non-factor until the Gavia stage....now, no doubt he rode brilliantly on that stage, but a whole host of other factors impacted that stage as well. Maybe it was well-timed tactics. Dunno, but time will tell.
And, it was a pretty weak field this year as well...... |

They need to limit the number of motos on the race course.
Some helmets are just ugly looking.
I'll be watching next year in Italy. (I'll be learning Italian with Rosetta Stone on my drive back East)

CK, he crashed and got sick. Said that he did not have it because of that until the Gavia/Stevio stage.
I expect him to get better. He impresses me as being sharp, someone who learns from mistakes. I expect to see him finishing closer to the front on non-climbing stages in the future to improve his odds with crashes and splits. He does have the disadvantage of being on a team with fewer veterans and experience than say Uran on the very deep Omega Pharma team.
In a couple of years I would not be surprised to see him racing tete-a-tete with the power meter zombies.

1. the management pro cycling races is (and always will be) a bit of a sh*t show, location doesn't matter. Twilight or the Giro - amateur hour just the same
2. Italy itself is awesome

@Roadbuzz: gotta disagree. Sprints are over fast, a breakaway that sticks can take the likes of Cav out of the picture entirely, and one gets to see the race going uphill for a greater length of time. Maybe then who can also manage a fast descent, or who can't (Andy Schleck).
I hope Quintana never becomes a 'power meter zombie' LOL |

| +1 Mike -- for me there is nothing like watching a pure climber attack up an iconic climb. Think Pantani in 1998 beating down just bout everyone -- Lance dropping Pantani on Hautacam (OK Lance wasnt a pure climber but he was damned good at it juiced tho he and everyone else was - and like it or not it WAS entertaining), Mayo flying up L'Alpe in 2003? was it? Contador and Rasmussen playing cat and mouse (can a chicken play cat and mouse?) in 2007. Those were awesome battles and far more entertaining to me than seeing who can ride the fastest for 200 flat meters at the end of a non-descript stage. |

It takes all kinds to make this sport, sprinters, climbers, roleurs.
I just checked the results every day, didn't really follow any of the stages. It seemed like another cold wet Giro. The riders might develop a complex about racing in Italy in May. Good for the jacket manufs.
If I could win stages at will like Bouhani, I'd be happy even if the top 3 sprinters were absent for his wins.
Quintana and Movistar made the right choice. Win a few Giros and Vueltas and wait for a Tour that suits him. In the meantime, don't let that TT rig gather any dust. |
