Does the sprinter make the leadout train successful or the train make the sprinter a success? Seeing Giant-Shimano win with both Kittel and Degankolb and Cav crashing trying to make it to the front I'm leaning toward the train being most important.

Maybe add luck to that equation, too.

The trail wasn't Cave issue, the car that stopped in front of him was. You can't have a successful train without a good sprinter, and good sprinters can win without a train.

Its all about the sprinters. A great leadout train can make the sprinter better, but you need the sprinter to begin with. Our leadout train is one of the best in our local races that end in a field sprint. We control the race for the last 2K. Each team member know exactly where to be and what to do as we rip the final 2k. This year, our sprinter has not been up to snuff and while he still is placed in the position to get a top 5, victory has been elusive. I good leadout train allows your sprinter to HAVE great position w/o fighting for wheels.
