So, does Froome go for the Red Jersey, and then next season decides to do the Giro, try to become the next Triple Grand Tour Winner?
Or does Quintana Go after the red jersey, then does next years Tour and goes for the Triple?

Well, if Froome wins the Vuelta and then the Giro, he could pull of the cycling equivalent of the "Tiger Slam"...consecutive wins across all majors / tours, just not in the same calendar year.

I think going for the Giro / Tour double is just silly at this point. You are almost certain to doom your Tour chances.

I think the Tour / Vuelta will become the standard for the new "double" as failing in the second goal nowhere near surpasses the previous success. Low risk, high reward. The Giro / Tour double is high risk / high(er) reward.....

What Tinkov said. None of this double/triple stuff has any meaning unless the same guys compete against each other in same races.

oh yeah, for sure, Alberto was tired after a hard Giro, when his rivals were fresh. He had nothing when things got serious. Back when Pantani did it, everybody raced everything. Tinkoff cries more than Nibali, dude is getting old quick.
Would love to see Quintana win the Vuelta, then go for the Tour next year with a fresh Alberto there, Froome, etc...

I don't think the grand slam or double or triple is for everyone. Some guys can try it and some can't depending on where they are in their careers, fitness during a given year, etc. The fact that the playing field is not level at any given time just makes it harder. More power to any rider that tries.
Sounds like Froome is going for two. But if he gets that he ought to go for 3. Not surprised at all if he skips the Giro. It comes to money, what the organizer is offering, what sponsors kick in etc. I wonder how much negotiation it took to stack the Vuelta field. Though in my mind some of these guys are paid to ride GTs and they are not riding any of the classics so they need to be at 2 GTs per year even if they might only ride for podium at 1.

it would be interesting if the uci made doing a triple an actual event. so maybe the top racers sign up for the tripe at the beginning of the year. they would have to dose their power over the 3 grand tours giving guys that might not win a single tour a shot at blowing themselves up to get an overall win in just one tour.
How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.

The Pantani comparison is, IMO, not relevant. He was very talented, yes, but very thoroughly doped. More than Lance most likely. Remember him finishing mountaintop stages of the Tour hardly breaking a sweat, and in other stages sprinting with the classics types, with his mouth closed because he was wasn't breathing hard? The juice works well.

Skinny's idea is interesting: some sort of award for the best combined finish in the three GTs. How would you do it? Total time? Placings in each race? Double weight the Tour? It would still be a crazy effort, and shorten careers. What other major sport extracts so much from the participants? Pro road cycling is in some ways a holdout from the dance marathon competitions, walking marathons, truly 6 day races, and similar sadistic events from 100 years ago.

Tennis and golf gets the top players in all the grand events because that is how the get paid. They are not paid a salary. The have to play to get a pay check.

Cyclists get paid if they go to event or not. Unless that changes there is little chance they will ride 3 GT in a year.

Golly (a word I use only when beyond upset) I wish Comcast would get Universal Sports. Having a hard time finding the race with the usual players.

Steephill has been pretty solid, Universal has coverage online, you just need to add your provider number for cable, which I don't have.....

Here's what I don't understand.....NBC Universal OWNS Universal Sports but they dropped it from the lineup when they bought Comcast. HUH? Now that we bought you, we are going to have you drop our channel. Shouldn't you use a purchase like to to EXPAND your distribution, not reduce it?

Man I've become jaded about cycling.

I had this thought today. Froome is in the Vuelta just loose to show his isn't dropped up. They want to show he is human so they entered him and held off on the dope.

I have become so cynical I hate it.

a. everyone does it
b. the other GC guys attacked when I fell
c. that hurt my feelings
d. my team didnt get me back on the road fast enough
e. that also hurt my feelings
f. did I mention that everyone does it?
