Link From my time around a hospital, I believe, eventually the final step available would be IV antibiotics. However, it doesn't make sense that a healthy person would need this. Then again, I ain't a doctor. Also, I know that damaged lungs can have more spots to harbor bacteria. At least after radiation therapy, as I was involved in oncology once upon a time. N

Removing the stress of competing in such a hard endurance sport will help, too.

I've been riding for decades. I occasionally come down with a bad cold, chest congestion (maybe once every couple of years). One year I had a major chest cold that put me down for a few weeks. It would not go away. I bit the bullet and decided to get back on my bike. I felt dizzy and lightheaded, short of breath (almost fainted). This went on for a few days. Went to my doc, he pulled me off my bike. A bunch of tests later I was diagnosed with myocarditis, it damaged my heart. I take meds (this occurred in 2009). I can't ride with the same intensity as before (granted I'm older). So if you have something going on with a bad chest cold. Go see a doc. Don't play around. it doesn't just happen to the pro's.
