Just race the race. I'd love to see the radios banned along with racing with power meters.

How about making these guys actually think on the bike?

Doesn't have anything to do with radios or power meters. Rookie mistake and I am surprised someone with Nibali's experience went along with it. It is probably a measure of his own uncertainty about overall chances, including his reaction to blame the team car.

Yeah, I'm with OC....they said he should give it a go if he felt good....reasonable tactic for a hilltop finish. That does not mean attack on a downhill section into a headwind. That is just dumb.

Either:
1. He just plain screwed up, maybe or maybe not with assistance from the car, and chalk it up to a bad day...
2. He's not in good enough form, mentally or physically, to win and he knows it. So possibly trying some desparation moves...
3. He's a genius and faking either/both 1 or 2 above to get the spotlight off him as much as possible, and will open up a can of whoop a$$ later in the race and take the win...
I have no idea which option is REALLY taking place.

I remember doing that move in a hilly race not far from Branson, Missouri .... as a Cat V

Similar to this....a few years ago I did the Sub-5 Century Challenge with some buddies. hadn't been riding much, so after the first loop (33.5 miles / loop), I was pretty much just riding wheels and keeping my nose out of the wind.

Towards the end (90+ miles in or so), felt like I should make an effort and rolled through on a windy, downhill section.....look ahead and see a short, steep hill dead ahead. Said out load....."well THAT was a really bad idea!" We still laugh about it today.....
