Now saying it was heart failure.
After I retired in 1998 I returned to cycling after not riding for several years because of work obligations and family time. Say what you want about Lance Armstrong, but he created a huge interest in cycling in the USA. The networks started showing all the stages of the TDF. I sat in front of my TV listening to Paul and Phil and relearning the sport. Yeah, sometimes he said some silly stuff, and both of them seemed a little bit dated in the technology. But they came across as being two really nice kind men. Paul will be sorely missed, he was a true gentleman and a genuine nice guy.
I had a problem with my heart in 2009 and am now taking meds. I had warning signs. I was lucky. I take meds now, which slow me down a bit, but I can still ride. If you have any symptoms of a heart condition (chest pains, shortness of breath, dizzyness) see a doctor. I don't know if Paul had any indications of a heart condition, most of the time you do, but sometimes you don't . Just a precaution. |

| Always enjoyed listening to him on TV broadcasts no matter what. Can't know how hard it must be to fill a multi hour broadcast with always relevant correct commentary. What Zoot said. B aware of heart symptoms, which I'm sure most of you young racers are. But you never know. Dealt with Afib and did not realize it until a ride in Lake Tahoe. Never had a problem catching my breath when just trying to ride and not know why. Few close calls with the meds but still kicking. |

62 is way too young. He was good at letting Phil know when he said something utterly ridiculous.
Getting old is scary. I'm 52, and my first USCF license was when I was like 15. So seeing pictures of him racing back in the day look "current" to me.
