I read CyclingNews about Cavendish crashing at Ghent and leaving on a stretcher, two broken ribs and a collapsed lung.  I feel for him.  Been there.  Next thought - probably a moment of bad riding on somebody's part.  (After all, the track.  No potholes, leaves, dogs, unruly spectators on the roadway.)  It was the track, or rather, moisture on it.  Another rider saw the moisture the lap before but at Madison speeds, how do you convey this to the infield?

I wonder if this was a matter of poor sweat management by a rider.

As for Cavendish - if my experience applies, he'll get over this just fine but it will take some time.  Painful!  And the deep breaths that are such a godsend to speedy healing cause the biggest and sharpest pain.  I'm guessing he'll figure out early that to sleep, he needs in addition to his bed, a comfortable couch or armchair.  (I used both and kept pillows and comforters by each.  Rolling over was way, way too painful.  I just got up and moved.)

No, the track racers get small amounts (cups?) of water to get rid of dry throat. One spilled. No time for warning. There's some commentary in Belgium that this may be the end of handing out that water during 6-day events. That's the only events where this happens because of amount of time spent on track. It doesn't happen during normal track races.

Ouch...I fractured 4 ribs back in 2000 while descending. I don't remember going down. Painful injury. I was in the hospital for 5 days. Even worse than when I fractured my right hip five years later. Yeah, I'm injury prone. Learned the hard way not to hang it all out...

Sounds like they should pass up little one-swig WBs.  (I know Madisons and 6-day racing are recent events but couldn't somebody figure out a ride water-feed that works.  Or is that what the next 100 years are for?)

I know. You’d also think they would have figured derailleurs and non-fix drivetrains by now hahaha.
