How the hell does one get to the point where they are on the TDF team if really afraid of fast descents? Surely he would have done plenty of them in races leading up to July..? http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/pinot-out-of-tour-de-france

He had a bad crash a few years back, and his fear seems to be getting worse instead of better. Maybe some hypnosis is in order, or maybe a new job.

Not a spoiler: Froome almost went done within a few meters of where Beloki broke his hip. Hot tar is scary on two wheels.
