Not a bad haul for your first TDF Nairo Quintana (Movistar) won the youth classification, poka dot and finished 2nd over all. That is pretty stout.

Dude is the biggest poker face since Jalabert. Hell of a climber. Nice to see a purist get it done.

nairo "it's a good day to climb" quintana. a pleasure to watch a pure climber in action. i suspect next year's tour will lean toward ITT, but expect (and hope) quintana grows fond of the polka dots.

perhaps it's wishful thinking, but i'd like to believe that the columbians can return in force to the euro ranks now that there's less artificial sweetener in the peloton. they used to be terrible descenders but quintana proved not only good at that but also not getting blown off the back on the flats, in xwinds, etc. (see mayo, iban). very impressive for the little guy to be second on the podium.

Prior generation of Columbians went uphill at 23mph and rode the flats at 22 mph. This guy is good, and benefitted from an outstanding team.

Anybody notice that while accepting his jerseys/trophies, Quintana still didn't see eye-to-eye with the podium girls?

Best part of the tour imho. Can you imagine 52 kilos (according to NBCS I have not verified), can you imagine what his strength to weight ratio is.

I wonder what was going through NQ's head during stage 13 (besides amigo don't get dropped in this crosswind) while his whole team was dropping out of GC contention except himself. Instead of working for Valverde, they were working for him. I'm not sure a chance like this will come around very often for him in the Tour. Maybe the Giro or Vuelta, but there is usually way too much flat TT'ing for a guy like him.

Wasn't there a country song written about him, done by many including Willie Nelson? I think the title is "Climbing time". Main lyrics "It's climbing time again, I'm going to leave you".

Seriously, that guy is fun to watch. 40 years ago he could have been my idol. (The best words I heard all weekend at the Cycle Oregon I just rode would apply better to Quintana. As I crested the big climb, a volunteer called out "He's dancing!")

I don't know, I think we will be seeing him contend for the tour GC for years to come. Long flat TT's will be tough for him, but I think he has proven himself to be pretty competent at shorter hillier TT's. He didn't loose much time to any of the GC guys except Froome on the first flat TT.

I just realized I got those lyrics all messed up. "It's climbing time again, you're going to leave me. I can see that far away look in your eyes ..." Willie Nelson, Nora Jones and the Wynton Marsailles band do it beautifully.

I was curious where he lost his time.

Stage 4 , team TT lost 17 sec
Stage 8 , attacked to soon lost 1:45
Stage 10 , lost 5 sec ??
Stage 11, TT lost 3:16
Stage 15 , attacked to soon, lost 29 sec
Stage 17, TT lost 1:11
Stage 18 , gained 1:06
Stage 20 , gained 29 sec

In the end down 4:20.

Also, I was particularly enthused by the photo of nq at the top of mont ventoux. Head down, on the ground, almost passing out. That's a racer.
