"The urge to win is gone" and "getting more conscious about the dangers of cycling". Had this been a good year he might have retired already but either way the exit is near.

I have wondered about the nature of his past dominance and never came to this conclusion

wasn't he known to say he'd retire at 30 regardless of how he was doing? he's 32 now.

My comments about TB belong on the Dark Side Forum.
Yes, one of the greats, like 7.

Classics guys should always retire the day after PR.

I got nothing but respect for Boonen, doping or not. Dude always rode his ass off and his comments lead me to believe he is nothing but gentleman and a hoot of a human being to hang out with.
On the actual topic...dude has been at the elite level for more than 1/2 of his life at this point. I am sure he has plenty of paper to keep him comfortable. Why not head to the friendly confines of the play-by-play booth?

Always enjoyed watching him ride -- and like Keith said, seemed like a decent person off the bike as well. Nobody rode the cobbles better.

Would love to see him try to grab PR #5 before officially calling it quits.

"seemed like a decent person off the bike as well." Yah, because he knows how to party! ;]

Actually...yeah. Exactly. Eddy Merckx was known to enjoy the occasional cig during the off season.
