Does he retire ?
Defend his Vuelta ?
Try for a Tour Poduim spot ?
Just go for another tour of CA title ?
Go back to being a helper in the GTs ?
Does he even get a contract for next year ?

Whatever he does if he races more than one or two races he is crazy. Hey it worked stick with it. Less is more sometimes.

Should be interesting to see what he does.

He's rumored to be in talks with Alonso's restructured Euskaltel squad.

I reckon he can't get to a Spanish team fast enough..... But since he is getting "better" with age and can now pull off things nev accomplished before, my guess is that he goes for the unprecented Giro / Tour / Vuelta triple next year.

I would think you'd be his biggest supporter, if you can do a sub 5 hr. Century with little to no training at your age while traveling around the world supporting your family think what a guy could do focused on doing nothing but riding.  Of course he's not going to run the triple but this Veulta was made for his best abilities, steep long climbs.
He claims he wants to ride 2 more years, I'm  betting he'll he catch a ride. Him and Jens are the class of the old guard and will be missed once they do retire.

1) I have been a supporter of his....until now. Sorry, this Vuelta just doesn't pass the sniff test.

2) false analogy for a number of reasons. I am not competing at the highest levels, with a more training resources than imaginable. Horner's potential as an athlete would have been realized / understood long ago. You don't get better / stronger at 41 with that kind of background. And my ride last weekend was well within my proven capabilities......

Next?

Rainbow stripes would be the cherry on Horner's sundae.

Equally plausable, I mean, doable.

Not a MENTION of the Vuelta in this AMs Phila Inquirer. Doper fatigue?

Let's not pretend that this Vuelta victory was anything other than a one-off facilitated by his late season freshness and the hilly nature of the course (plus whatever else may have contributed to it; who knows; who cares). As Master50 put it in the other thread, put in another TT you get a different outcome (Nibali wins handilly). So whatever Horner wants to do in final 2 yrs he'll have to be selective.

What next for Chris Horner?
Doping controls so frequent he'll be anemic. Haters and doubters rule.

i like chris horner -- passionate journeyman who would make an excellent color commentator (bobke replacement); a little nutty but he understands the game. but i'm with CK on this one... it just doesn't pass the sniff test in my book, for all the reasons previously provided and then some...

and for all the "it was great entertainment" posts: seems like we're right back to the lance years. hey, who cares if they're doping or not, so long as it provides me with some cheap thrills?

ps -- i think Lo Squalo is legit; and admire his restraint. 'course, he is from the birthplace of omerta :-)

Have to finally chime in. Agree, that this in no way comes close to passing the sniff test. I used to love watching CH and listening to his fresh take on cycling. One of the most loveable characters in cycling. Giving fellow racers a lift on his bike when theirs broke down etc.

After reading in interviews that he never saw or heard of doping on RS, and that he was unaware of it is when I began to lose my love of CH, despite the fact that I was fairly sure he had to have been part of the culture ( and rider 15).

I just don't see how a 41-42 year old recovers better then every other rider in a major tour. One filled with some very good contenders with consistent results over the years. And to say he was fresher is really not a believable excuse. Nibali took a bunch of time off after the Giro. He was going toe to toe with CH everyday, yet Horner comes out fresh as a daisy every day.

I think Horner should take his historical win and fade off into the sunset. Give us some great commentary, write some fun blogs, but go away with the Armstrong era of cycling.

Don't scoff at the entertainment factor Entheo. In my opinion it is one of the best metrics to determine where anti-doping investigations should be directed. Dominance = boring = better start looking :-)

this season has proven to be full of exciting, unpredictable results; a result, as you suggest, of a cleaner sport. horner's result is just a little TOO unpredictable in my book.

and so it begins, reminds me of Floyd. Not at all surprised, I figured the hilarity would begin as soon as the Veulta finished. The RS legal team with do its best to put lightning back into the bottle

Seems like a tempest in a teapot.....I highly doubt Horner was firing up blood bags and testo patches for the final stage into Madrid. He would have been tested abundantly during the Vuelta....a surprise test the day after the race ended was not likely to turn up anything suspicious.

From the Velonews article: "It’s a shame for Horner, and for cycling, that his victory cannot be wholly embraced, but that’s the reality of today’s peloton. Riders have to realize that after winning the race, they must then be ready to convince everyone that they can believe it. Fans simply do not want to be taken for fools again. Despite so much progress, even “new cycling” remains a faith game. Believe it, or not, at your peril." Sad but true.

That's not what I am getting at. Whatever Horner did or did not do, it will turn out to be small fry. Catching him will not make an impact when it comes to cleaning up the sport. Catching the big dogs that dominate (like LA) does make a big difference. So with limited resources at hand, that is where I think the anti-doping effort should go. There are plenty of obvious examples within and outside cycling of obvious dominance that continue to be able to do what they're doing while the small fry gets caught to make everyone look good. Anti-doping is still on the road to nowhere. So that is why I shrug at accusations thrown Horner's way (right or wrong): who cares, it will not make a difference, the Vuelta was entertaining to watch.
