Mollema pictured in centre posted this photo this week under the heading "there's only one guy who can beat ..."

The kid on the left went on to become a speed skater of some fame, multiple world champ and olympic medalist.

So who is it?

If it were freestyle with jumps and sh!t, the USA would totally dominate the folks from Pays-bas. How many skating medals for the orange-folk so far?

The long track and XC ski are my favorite events for sure. You almost feel the burn in their legs from the couch.

Chinook, 10 medals so far and more to come this weekend. The kid is of course Sven Kramer.

Spud - and then there's Eric Heiden. He got mad respect in NL for beating them at their own game; just like they're treating Shani Davis as one of their own these days. Too bad he did not manage the three-peat on the 1,000 m.

It's like watching Jamica in track and field in everything under 400m. A small population country producing a bunch of world class men and women.

I would have guessed cross country skiing and cycling would have more in common than cycling and speed skating.

D'oh. I didn't see OC's mention of Eric Heiden. When the guy finished being a huge speed skater and cyclist, he went to medical school.

Cycling is THE summer sport for speed skaters to stay fit (intensity) over and above gym training. The Dutch nationals typically have a good contingent of speed skaters showing up.

Just to name a few cyclist-skaters, skater-cyclists:

Seiko Hashimoto
Theo Bos
Steven de Jongh
Gert Jakobs
Connie Paraskevin
Connie Carpenter (yes, that one)

And Marianne Vos raced against current speed skating queen Ireen Wust admittedly not even getting close.
