If I'm remembering correctly, Steve (the owner of the site) asked for feedback on the sub-forums of the forum. I kinda liked how we had it at the VN forum where everything went in one place and there was no need for all the sub-forums. Any idea if the sub-forums will at least be trimmed a little? I think there are too many of them right now and it's kinda annoying to be jumping from one to another... I think a "cycling general" and an "off topic" sub forums would be enough....especially since so few of us are here. If a lot more people join in the future, I can see the use of a few more extra sub forums.

I think it should be one big forum and the first things to go should be the "cyclocross, commuting and mountain bike" sections. Then inside the road cycling (Which should be called just Cycling) we could get rid of the "professional racing, gear advice, road cycling, the dark side, new cyclists, training talk and the ride spot".

So I think it should just be a Cycling forum with two sub forums; general and off topic. That should be enough and it would make it way easier to navigate.

billygoat - it is easy to get that one-place feeling by clicking active topics right underneath the big velonation user forums banner.

You can then select how far back you want to look.

I would still like to see a more simplified version of the different forums since I might want to read a thread that isn't necessarily active.

This obviously is my suggestion. Maybe someone else might want to chime in also.

Thanks Steve for helping us out.

I would agree that fewer sub-forums would be better. But I do like having a separate doping forum, I have to admit.

Were I king of the world, I'd probably have a General forum, a doping forum and maybe an OT forum. More could always be added later.

Just my $.02....and likely worth less than that!!

i think it depends on how much traffic the forum gets. mtbr has lots of sub forums because they get lots of traffic.

I'm with billy and CK re: a simplification, maybe a main forum and a couple subforums for really specific stuff.  No need for separate forums for training, gear advice, coffee shop, etc.  Looks sort of cool in the directory but makes it difficult to manage.  Plus, one forum always ends up getting the majority of posts after a few months of heavy traffic and everyone ends up going there.

Whatever you decide, thanks for the nice fourm, Steve.  I, too, am a velonews transplant.  Was on that forum since the early tech talk days.  Sad, but it just got overrun with spam.  Also, got a bit too nasty at times, lots of personal attacks, etc., which was tiresome.  This seems like a good new beginning.

Thanks for the feedback winterale - I'm listening, but was just waiting to 1) get more feedback and 2) see which forums are (and aren't) used...then I think it will make more sense to decide.

couple of forums rather then whole gamut that exists now. The velonews forum was good in that respect. winterale

If you click the "active topics" tab near the top left you get a pretty similar view as we had at spamalot. You can adjust the view so that you can see what has been active in the lat few hours to the last few days or more. I'm liking this format, but must admit that the list of sub-forums is a bit dizzying. I just bookmark the "active topics" page and it reloads when I go to that bookmark. My 2c.

Thanks for taking on all the traffic, Steve. You have a great site here.

I agree with simplification if only because you get more people and ideas in one place.
I too am an VN transplant. Nice to be here!

Thanks for the comments @Habanero and @JRH2

@JRH2 - yes, that's exactly what the Active Topics view is for, and you can dial it down to the last time you visited the site with the dropdown on the right. You can also use the My Topics filter to see if anything new has been posted to a thread you're involved in. Each thread/forum also has a "Subscribe" checkbox at the top and when you post a message, so you can also get an email with a link whenever a new comment is added to the things you want to keep close track of - the one at the top says "Check this box to subscribe to this topic" If you decide to subscribe to the emails, you might want to be proactive about allowing the velonation.com domain in your email.

Thanks,
Steve

I also added the latest news (minus the race reports) to the right, so you can also see what's going on in the cycling world when you're here on the forums.
