Just ask my stepson that question. Going on day 8 in the burn center for road rash to the hip and elbow, after another motorcyle took him out. He was driving his motorcyle in front of a car. The other bike crossed two lane to get to the exit, not seeing my stepson, and hitting his front end. Safe to say, his motorcyle days on the roadway are now over. He told me he isn't even going to ride his bicycle on the road anymore, after this. Can't say I blame him.

Glad he's ok.

I hope his reaction is just that it's so close to the accident. If he really loves riding, he will find his way back.

I hope your boy heals quickly and completely.

I would not ride my moto without a helmet. It's a crap shoot on the road, and every bit of protection MAY help with the odds.

I hope the knucklehead on the moto that caused the crash was caught.

And more than the helmet. This is a reminder that Kevlar or leather are important, too.

OMG. My son is 16, and just seeing that picture terrifies me. I'm glad he's *relatively* "OK".

I've had a bicycle helmet "work" once. It was in the mid/late '80's, an early Monarch brand, and the outer shell cracked, and the Styrofoam compressed. I didn't even realize it until later.

Not meaning to pile on his pain but aside from the helmet what other safety gear was he wearing? On a bicycle we sometimes approach motor vehicle speeds and a crash can have horrible consequences with Lycra as our only armour. I ride a motorcycle too and I can't ride it without all the gear. Pants boots jacket and helmet all for road rash rather than a big hit.
Dress for the slide not the ride!
I hope he heals fast and regardless of his continuing to ride he will need to deal with the emotion of it all. Getting back on the horse so to speak. I am sure you can relate how hard it is to regain your mojo after a crash.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. He may ride again one day, but he assured me, not while living in Scottsdale. Master50, that nice Kevlar jacket we bought him when he first started riding was in his backpack. Yeah, he's wishing he had it on now. I'm sure he'll ride out in the desert on his dirt bikes, but it may take living in a safer place, less crowded, for him to get on the road.

Spud I am sorry to hear that. Yes it is funny how the young ones don't need no safety gear?? It is always crappy to learn why when you are not wearing it. Glad he is well enough to learn the lesson. some don't get the second chance. Hope he heals quickly and smarter too.

I had visions of that helmet picture on my commute. I hope that he gets well soon!

Yeah, in my worst moto crash (1982, took a turn too fast on a hot July Friday afternoon ) I was wearing a helmet, boots, gloves, jeans, shirt - but not even a denim jacket.  I prob hit the brakes too hard but in retrospect sliding was better than hitting the guard rail or going over it.

PPD for motos was a lot more primitive back then, and the road rash and sleeping on my stomach for a few weeks was not fun.

At least I had a nice long wait in the ER, which I gradually realized meant that I was not that bad off. Just a tiny scratch on the helmet, and the leather boot saved my left ankle extra trauma as it slid between the moto and the road.

Cancelled my half-assed plans for relocating to Colorado after graduation, too.

I still occasionally ride on that road, and I hope your boy comes to terms with the event and the aftermath.

Best

Yo Mike: In my mind there's a big mental difference between the self-inflicted crashes and the ones that come out of nowhere, like Spud's stepson.

As cyclists we've all probably had dozens of self-inflicted crashes. You pick yourself up, think "that was stupid" and learn from it.

The ones that come out of blue are much harder to digest. Reminds me of 3 yrs ago when car mirror hit my handlebars with car going about 80kph. You know couple inches to right and...

As it stands I miraculously managed not to crash. Put the front wheel back straight, aligned the front brake and biked on. Best not to think too much about these events.

(The driver checked on me 3 times; not a bad guy)

Gawd, I remember riding home post road rash...long enough, it was starting to "heal", and having to rip it all open again to scrub it clean in the shower. Just grit yer teeth. Uggh.
