I was psyched to try out my new ice tires, Continental Topcontacts.  Went outside to see if the weather was worthy.  29F. Roads wet.  Raining chunks of ice.  Car completely iced.  Yeah, the new tires are called for.  I was planning to ride intown and do a bunch of small errands and check out a new bike shop/hangout (Velo Cult).  Thinking that it would be fun on those tires.  Went inside and started thinking about what to wear.  Then about the wind and Portland drivers.  Especially those drivers.  And about my vow for the year - rubber down.  Nah, I think I won't.

Am I getting older?  Yes.  Wiser?  I can't judge that, but maybe.  Becoming a wimp?  Maybe some of that too.  Valuing keeping the remains of my battered body intact?  Big time!

Same temperatures here but dry roads so no problem, just a coid morning commute.

I can't afford to crash and lose training time this year so will definitely be avoiding the sketchy days.

I would sell those ice tires to someone else so you won't be tempted to use them. There are only a handful of days around here where they are needed. Better to just go for a walk and watch everyone else crashing into each other from the safety of the sidewalk.

it sounds like good walking weather. that arctic blast has hit here with cool temps and dreary skies. it was damp and cool and windy this morning on the ride in and by lunch it had started drizzling. not so much i couldn't ride home but enough to make me want a stout to drink, a cow bell to rattle and a cyclocross race to watch. it might be close to freezing tonight and gosh darn it i have to run down to the brewery this evening to pick some stuff up for our annual toys for tots ride.

Maintaining health is priority.

I'm frickin' learning it the hard way, and would dearly love to go back in time and curb my @ss.

It ain't being a wimp, its about not being a dipsh!t.

I agree , 2 yrs ago I went out a day I shouldn't have to prove I was a harddass and could handle it.

Bike slipped on a patch of ice , busted my ass. Yes busted my ass, cracked my pelvic bone. Hurt like a son of a bitch. Couldn't walk for 2 weeks. Couldn't through a leg over a bike for a month. Couldn't pedal with any power for 6 months. Yup....I proved my self to be more dumbass than harddass.

If there were no cars...

I have decided that low 20s is too cold until I get better gloves. I just stayed in bed this morning when the alarm went off.

My issue has always been that my respiratory system doesn't like deep breathing air much below freezing.

i guess the whole thing depends on your motivation. why would you want to break a hip running errands? i would rather break a hip on an adventure.

I rode the mountain bike to work yesterday for potential black ice reasons and I have winter shoes for mountain bike too and it was cold. 2.35 trail star compound Hans Dampf are sticky. You can hear the knobs sticking to the pavement. Frickin slow though. But upright.

Love those tires for the local east coast slippery stuff. Right now just using for the front with something less aggressive in the back to help with the lousy rolling resistance.
