Well, I broke down and bought a carbon fatbike, pretty cool, I'll be riding this thing year round! Salsa Beargrease, 26lbs, 1x11, after bombing a few downhills, I can totally see why some folks are adding a shock to these

Sweet!

I plan on acquiring one of those when I make my move to the Methow Valley.

And I'm not talking about the beard ; )

Mmmmm.....bike pjorn.

Considered one earlier this year, but thought better of it. I would only ride it a handful of times in the snow probably and storing it would be a bitch in our smallgarage.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

we rode these up in an area called Aspen Vista, actually made it the radio towers on the top of the mountain despite post holing in about 28 inches of snow every time we stopped, the we partially poached a ski run on the way back down, you should have seen some of the looks we were getting from the skiers, it was hilarious! We were actually passing them on the run down, you can haul butt on these things, then we cut off to reconnect to the trail, it was a blast, but I will say climbing on one of these is solid work, we were gassed at the end

NICE!

I'm in the same boat as cosmic. If I lived somewhere with more snow, I would have one of these for sure, but living in Boise I wouldn't ride it enough to justifying buying one. Plus, I rarely ride below freezing anymore...old age has made me a wuuse!

Funny about the ski slope. But, umm, isn't that 6" between the top of your socks and the bottom of your tights/knickers cold?!

Nick, ha ha ha, I think it was 22 degrees?yes just had knickers on, well, fleece lined knickers under these Endura knickers. Funny thing was, we were creating so much heat, at one point my jacket was around my waist, and I was just in a merino baselayer. It's crazy when your body gets acclimated, it was 28 here yesterday, warmest it's been in over a week, felt like a heatwave!!

Gonzo, I jest in peril. My weight's been going up, and my riding is in the toilet. Been spending my free time working on my project car. We've been in Albuquerque for 15 years now, and I've acclimated...in the other direction. I've been freezing my butt off! Considering I grew up in NY, and have lived in Pittsburgh and Colorado, you think I'd be able to handle it. LOL. I feel like I'm regressing back to tourist. Approaching 50, and I think a triple is in my future. A long way from a five speed freewheel with the lowest gear being a 42X19!!!

It's a dry cold . . .
Love those Endura knickers, even more in the wet sloppy stuff. Great product.

Hey Gonzo! good on ya! two of my riding buddies got some of them beargreases and they are sure sweet. dressing for the ride can be tough. if you're in the bush away from wind, you can be riding in -10C and be dressed the equivalent of 0C for the road. i usually bring a spare undershirt and gloves and swap 'em out after an hour if we've been going hard and sweaty.

I did my first snow bike outing recently. It was loads of fun. A friend and I rented a pair and went out on some trails for a couple hours. It was a hoot. Great workout and also required serious mental focus since I hadn't done it before, and I don't mountain bike. Lack of skills in evidence by the slow pace in more technical sections, and even on pretty straightforward descents. Not sure I'll get into it as XC and alpine skiing, and snowshoeing/winter hiking are really my winter focus. Oh, and riding that trainer and never getting to the other end of my loft, of course!

Not sure why it took me this long to remember...I began road riding pre-mountain bike existence. I got my first mountain bike in early '90's while living in NYC (Gary Fischer Excalibur, construction green with black, yes the '90's). We had a big snow, and I bundled up in old school ski type stuff and went riding in Central Park looking like a mummy. I must have been quite a sight, because some one taking "arty" photos stopped dead in his tracks to snap a pic of me.

Nick A, good to hear that you are just south of me, I like heading down there this time of year, it's a good ten degrees warmer down there than here in Santa Fe, they have done a great job on the paved trail system in the past few years, it's quite nice plus, less ice/snow, etc....unfortunately, I think the getting cold thing is just age Nick, will be 52 in about a month, I think the ol' blood is getting a little thin, have been wearing more clothing this winter than in years past, maybe I'm getting smarter? ha ha ha I doubt that!!
Jacques, yeah, I bought one of those huge Revelate seat bags, good for extra clothing, gloves, packable vest, food, etc.....
