How do folks decide it's time for a new seat?  Mileage, sore butts?

Visible sag, wear and sometimes a saddle that was comfortable isn't any more.

Problem is the price of saddles is going up, along with everything else. Don't be shocked at sticker price when you go to replace your fav saddle. I scored on eBay when replacing my 4 year old San Marco Regale. Found a brand new demo model for $39.00.

Have been meaning to send a worn saddle to these guys http://www.recoveredsaddle.com/, but haven't gotten around to it.

Worn through cover, or torn from wreck...or broken rail (I think back in the days of magnesium)!!

Mine doesn't look particularly worn, some wear, but not what I would think of as used up. That said, it went from a comfortable saddle to being very uncomfortable over the course of a couple hundred miles in about a 10-day period. The seams from chamois pad edges on several different shorts are leaving irritated stripes (so I know it's not a shorts issue) and my sit bones were sooooooore after only a 50 mile ride this weekend. I'm thinking the foam is just compressed enough so that it's just not very helpful anymore.

Ordered a new one, same type/model so geometry won't be an issue. Should be here mid-week. Fingers crossed.

Oh, and it's a Selle Italia Pro Flite Gel Flow (I think I have that right).

Hope it works! I am scheduled for a 175-mile ride Saturday. If that doesn't work that is gonna suuuuuuuck!

Since you ordered the same exact saddle, you should not have a problem. Should find it very comfi...

Thinline - interesting; I have a similar experience but came to a different conclusion this weekend.

Cover of left back end of saddle looks a little worn but not what I would consider worn out or used up. Pressing both back ends of saddle they feel about equally firm. Yet I'd been noticing a bit of skin irritation on left butt cheek when wearing most bibs coinciding like you with chamois edge. No sore sit bones whatsoever though; and I've come to conclusion its the bibs, not seat.

I am ordering some more Santini tempo bib shorts today; the only ones I've found to be exceedingly comfortable over long distances. Zero irritation and even after my butts been irritated with other shorts and I wear these next day, it still feels comfortable.

The seat I will keep for now. Funny how none of this matters on regular rides but I on these long rides every little detail becomes important.

True that!
