OK. I have a decent i7 computer because my kid games. It had Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. One day, Office completely died. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, Microsoft repair files, etc., etc., etc. Nothing worked. My kid doesn't want to go to 10 yet, because a lot of games might not work on it (Steam). I had a Windows 7 Professional disk left over from an old laptop. So I reinstalled Windows. But it turns out is 32 bit, and I didn't realize. Windows.old is still on my machine. If I restore that, will I get 64 bit back? I'm guessing no. Although I bought this machine with a legit copy of Windows, I don't have the sticker with the 25 digit code anywhere. I'm obsessing over the many options. Would I get 64 back form Windows.old? If so, I could get my semi-corrupt Windows 7 64 bit back, and upgrade to Windows 10 64 bit for free (my kid'll get over it). Leave the 32 bit, and access only half of my RAM. (Really don't want to do that.) Pay for a copy of Windows 7 64 bit, or Windows 10 64 bit and fresh install again. I could go back to the store where I bought the refurbished computer and see if they'd give me Window 7 64 bit for free, since it came with the computer, but I doubt it, and they'd charge me to install it, I guess. And while I've got you...! Windows.old is taking up SOO much space. IF I get rid of it, is there a better way than just "deleting" many gigs and waiting forever? When I reinstalled Windows 7, I just booted from the CD. Is this the best way to do it? N

I'm pretty sure you can go back to Windows Update or Recovery and you'll be able to revert back to all that stuff saved in Windows.Old. That's why it's there.

As for Windows 10 upgrade, there is very little risk. I upgraded about a month ago and used it for about a week before reverting back to 7. Nice thing is that Microsoft saves a virtual image of your computer for a month in order to try Windows 10. I simply clicked on "go back to Windows 7" and within a few minutes I was right back to where I was! I've sworn like a sailor at Microsoft in the past but they are definitely getting their act together and making some nice products. Only reason I went back to 7 is because the docking station I use doesn't have updated software/drivers. The toolbars in my CAD programs went wild when I switched from the 30" monitor to the laptop screen in Windows 10 and I couldn't figure out how to fix it, nor did I want to spend the time to figure it out. Hence, back to 7 I go!!

Good luck!! On a related note, there are some cheap programs (like, $30 or so) that will retrieve those software-keys from programs already installed. Could be useful.

Thanks for tip on the software keys. I may try to go back with the Windows.old. Then, not sure what to do. If I got the key, I'd still need to hunt down a copy of Windows 7 64 bit to use the key on, unless my problems go away with all of this monkeying around. Office died, which is why I did all of this in the first place!

I'm re-backing up the user files in anticipation of trying to revert. I'm proud of myself that I wrote a batch program to do this. It uses ROBOCOPY, so it doesn't have to re-copy everything. However, it's taking forever right now due to some reasons that are probably beyond my ability or caring. I think it has to do with the re-install, and some stuff having a more recent date, my wife not having logged into her iTunes, and ROBOCOPY isn't finding some sub folders that haven't be re-created yet. As long as we have the docs, music and photos, I don't care.

LOL. Thanks. Anyone else?

Haha - Microsoft. Got the message that XP was no longer being supported. Had a CD with Windows 7 Professional disk with a perfectly valid installation key. Installed it and now we're stuck with an OS that keeps telling us the copy is not genuine. I left it at that, black background screen, annoying reminders and all. The unit is making some grinding sounds, either the fan or hard drive, so its probably about to blow anyway.

The kids have Windows 8 and hate it. I think one of them figured out the upgrade to 10. I mostly let them figure it out themselves. At age 12 they know about as much as me.

6ix, why did you dump 10 for 7? I know 8 is crap.

Yeah. I have a notebook with 8. It's truly awful.

Well, for all of you holding your breath (NOT!). I paid to have Windows 7 64 bit reinstalled, and took it from there. I try to let go of some DIY stuff, because, well sometimes it's just not worth it. I suppose this was one of those cases, but I wound up having to clean up the computer after I got it back by uninstalling random programs they had used. I also paid to have everything switched to a new case. It was a second hand gaming computer, and the thing had a lot of silly bells and whistles that got in the way: a big switch on the front that got knocked into all of the time, and was going bad. An intrusion disabling switch thing on the side panel that got loose and shut down the computer, etc., etc. Well, when I got it home I had open it back up, and attach the power supply to the video card.

Oh well. Everything's working now.
