Today was a beautiful day for a ride. Still a long-sleeve jersey but no (not so expensive) vest. As I was near the end of my ride, I noticed a car pull off into a vacant parking lot. As I passed, I saw a couple of women studying a map, so I circled back to check if they were lost. Indeed they were. They were on the way from Albany to West Point, and a friend told them to get off the NYS Thruway at 17 and follow the signs to West Point. In good faith, they got off at Exit 17 but got lost. They should have continued to Route 17 at Exit 16. I gave them more detailed instructions and wished them well. I knew the route well because I have cycled it many times.

One of the many beauties of cycling-- observing things we miss when we're in a car, knowing the oddball back roads, seeing people who need a hand.

Good for you for helping.

Always good to help others...good for you, Smokey.

But it does kinda crack me up that in this day and age of GPS everything, people can still get hopelessly lost.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

I live in the Ozarks and there is a road that leads into a subdivision that is hilly as can be, with loads of very tight turns. Some of the residences put up a sign to the effect of "Your GPS is wrong! Trucks over 24' do not enter, find an alternate route!"

I took a trail the other day that I thought would take me out of a subdivision into the wild. It was steep and deep gravel and barely managed to crest. Reached the top and the only way forward was an equally steep down into the next subdivision the exit road of such spat me back out into the first subdivision. Second go at escape I just used the main road where cars go. Sometimes following Google maps can spring surprises. Eventually I did reach the wilds and barely out the subdivision a very lively and jumpy coyote crossed my trail.

The other evening I went out for a short ride after the rain had stopped. Going down a well-traveled road with mostly woods on either side, I spotted a phone lying along the road. I figured it was just an old broken phone that someone had chucked out the window, but nevertheless I stopped up ahead, doubled back, and picked it up. I was surprised to see it was a Plus size iPhone, all wet. I took it home, intending to give it to the police the next day, and to leave a note by the road in the spot where I found it. When I got home I pressed the on button and the screen lit up, with a message saying that if found, to please call the number on the screen. So I did. The owner, who lives on the other side of our township, sure was happy, but mystified as to how the phone wound up there. We met later that evening in a parking lot. I asked if he’d perhaps put the phone down on his car and then drove away, and he replied that he’d realized that that was the exactly what happened. He’d gone food shopping and had laid it on the car while he opened the trunk to put his groceries in it. He pulled out some bills to give me a reward, which of course I refused, but told him that if he wanted to do something for me, he could be extra kind and considerate to cyclists he encounters. And to pass on the favor to someone else. He promised that he would do just that.
