Springsteen on Broadway premiers on Netflix on December 16. I was never mpotivated enough to drop the $$ to see the show live, but watching the trailer kinda makes me wish I had. Super excited to see the show on Netflix.

Let's see if they have this on Canuckistan Netflix too.

I have a double sided cassette Live in Stockholm streamed live on Dutch radio back in 1988. That's as close as I ever got to a life performance. Typically don't put the big dollars down for the big names. We had the infamous Loners and Losers evenings where startup bands would come and play. Some made it big later on. Many didn't.

1988 - middle aged Bruce! Especially before his first album (early 1973 IIRC), and before that, even before the E Street Band was fully assembled, he was playing clubs on the east coast. We who followed him back then knew we were witnessing something special. George McGovern fundraiser, e.g. Only Ben and I are old enough to remember that far back. Looking forward to the Netflix show.
Favorite Bruce song, anyone?
Embracing my geezerness, For You. Brilliant Disguise a close second. Both sooo painful. Joni Mitchell admired both. Say no more.

lsd, I didn't follow Springsteen but your post brings back memories. McGovern. 7th grade. I was the only kid in the class who "voted" for him. Joni Mitchell - I never saw her. My awareness was raised simultaneously by hearing her on the radio and buying Tom Rush's "The Circle Game" and absolutely loving the song "Urge for Going" by her (and liking the other two Joni Mitchell songs a lot.

So flash forward to about 3 years ago. Went to see Tom Rush. (He still has it. His guitar playing is jaw-dropping. Quite the story teller. He came up when there was a lot going on. Cambridge, Greenwich Village. So he starts into a story, playing a club in Detroit. A singer/guitarist/songwriter made the trek from Toronto to (hopefully) get him to do a few of her songs. The songs looked good. Then Tom remembered he owed his record company another album; in fact he was a year or two behind. So he put three of the songs on his next one. Named it for one of the songs. And we all know what happened to the songwriter.

And on a personal note: On of the songs is "Rockport Sunday" for Rockport, MA where my family spent summers. My summer with that new (to me; it had been out a couple of years) album was also the summer of seeing the woman I didn't marry. (Had I asked, she would have said yes, not maybe, and I knew it. I wasn't ready for the kids she wanted.) Upon not asking her, I decided I would race the next season and went out and bought the Bell Biker I promised myself I would wear if I entered the Cat 4 open races. Had I asked her, I wouldn't have been wearing a helmet when my Lambert broke. My life would have been very different. Playing that record brings up a lot! (And "Urge for Going" is a wonderful reflection appropriate for exactly this time of year.)

@ OC, I too had that cassette, taped form the radio broadcast. To this day, it remains one of my favorite Springsteen shows. If you are interested, they officially released that show this year (or maybe it was last year). It is the whole show (not just the first half that was broadcast) and has been completely remastered...the sound is brilliant. A mere $10 to download.

@lsd....no way I could pick a single favorite. It changes constantly depending on what is going on in my life. For me, that is the draw of his jusic....there is always something that is relate-able. Either through a social or personal perspective....there is always something there .

However, one that I always gravitate back to is Incident on 57th Street (but don't ask me to pick between a solo acoustic or full band version).

I've been lucky enough to see For You both full band and solo acoustic....amazing how different the same song can be in both meaning and feeling.

Oh, for got this...excellent interview with him from Esquire magazine. If you haven't read his autobiography, I highly recommend it. Utterly engrossing and brilliantly told.

Truth be told, I don't own a single Springsteen studio album. But he's a superb performer and showman, as well as a great observer of society; and that Stockholm show (or at least the first set that was broadcast and made it onto cassette) was indeed excellent.

Thanks for the link to the interview.

OC, I hardly ever listen to a studio album from Bruce, even the "great" ones such as Darkness or The River. Truth be told, I find them painful to listen to because the songs are so much better live. So I listen to shows from a certain era if I want to hear those songs.....as you experienced with the Stockholm show, the live experience (even just recorded) is vastly superior to anything on a album.
