Interesting link, thanks.
Especially that maximum energy output for ultra endurance athletes is limited by how much nutrition the gut can absorb. The gut biome is complicated and poorly understood, but surely is related. Maybe certain gut bugs improve absorption - a new avenue of research. Future Skybots will take pills containing genetically engineered wonder probiotics

In terms of maximum performance (rather than absorption), surely there's an efficiency component as well. Some folks get more watts for the same internal energy consumption due to better mitochondria, biomechanics, and other factors.

I was kinda surprised by this "revelation"....triathletes have known this for years. Your gut can only absorb ~300 calories / hour during activity, but you are burning ~twice that (exact numbers depend on the individual). If you eat too much, you can't process it and your gut shuts down, which leads to gastro problems.

So for an event like Ironman, it is a question of keeping enough calories going in without running out while simultaneously trying not to ingest too many calories.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

I don't think that was the point of the article CK. It showed that during individual events like an Ironman or even 3 week events like the Tour you can temporarily go into a nutritional deficit but over longer time periods (weeks to months) the limit is 4000 cals per day give or take for average person. An Ironman is not ultra-endurance, it's those guys and gals running across the Sahara and things like that.

The pregnancy analog is great. Women being close to that long-term nutritional limit when pregnant.
