Hi, is there anyone on this forum familiar with selling bikes on ebay? I finally got rid of my Argon 18 tri bike, first time ever selling anything on ebay, I've bought but never sold anything. I'd listed it for US 1,200.00, "buyer pays for shipping" (I think I had that set up for $100.00) The buyer paid US 1,273.00. I got a bill from ebay today and they're going to charge me $317.08 (a "Final Value Fee" of $120.00, a "Final Value on Shipping" of $11.50 and a "UPS Label Fee" of $185). I thought the buyer was charged shipping???

Yeah, eBay changed how they charge sellers....not certain of the exact details, but it is a total rip-off now. I sold an old Cervelo for ~$1500 and also got hit w/ almost $400 in fees.

Freakin' extortion.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

I never bought or sold on eBay. Is there a contract or posted policy involved in the transaction? I would expect all fees to be described up front with no surprise billings. If there is a contract/policy and it states something different than your bill, I would challenge the bill. If you know an attorney, you can cc: your challenge to the attorney -- unless, of course, it generates more fees.
Good luck.

As American as apple pie. Build a better mousetrap, gain some loyalty, then cash in, screw your patrons to feather your nest.
That said, they still have a better mousetrap that offers more access to items than the interweb. Sometimes

only reason I'd ever consider using ebay again is for a product that's extremely rare or specific. While it's the wild wild west when it comes to dealing with people online, Craigslist is still effective. Or Facebook Marketplace. I sold my mountain bike on there in less than an hour and it was piece of cake. And no fees!! And since you can clearly see the person's profile, it seems far more transparent and safe.

But to your question, yeah, think you got screwed out of the shipping costs. Did they pay using Paypal? There is another deduction in what you get to take home. Suddenly that $1,200 sale ends up being only $750! Total BS.

Thanks for the responses. I posted the bike on Craigslist repeatedly for years, all I got was scammers and lowballers (I was lucky with a Yeti that I sold quickly, locally, and at a fair price). I'm not on Facebook so that left ebay. I did use Paypal, can't wait to see what I'm left with at the end of this sale. First and last time I sell through ebay though, lesson learned.

The back alley serves as my eBay. I don't make any money on transactions but don't get any hassles either.

Put an old bedframe there on Saturday. It was gone within the hour. Old bikes have gone there too.

We're also on a local community FB help page. The "as new" mattress that went with bedframe found a good home with a family in need through that channel.

Got the low down on what happened with all the fees...
Listed price: $ 1,200.00 Buyer pays for shipping ($115.00)
I shipped the bike using ebay's UPS label for a total weight of 30 lbs but it ended up weighing more (38 iirc when the UPS clerk put the box on the scale).
UPS must have flagged and invoiced the difference through eBay, which charged me back $185.00.
Meanwhile Paypal helped themselves to about $40.00 out of the transaction, leaving me with $1,273.00 - that's item price + the $ 115.00 in shipping paid by the buyer, minus Paypal's $40 commission/fee/whatever)
Then comes ebay's 10% fee based on the price of the item ($120.00), and another $11 or so of "shipped value fee" or some such extra bs fee added on top of everything else.
In the end, I listed and sold the bike for $1,200.00 and will have about $ 955 in my pocket.

FWIW - eBay started charging on the shipping because there was an increasing amount of sellers who would transaction almost exclusively through the shipping fee to avoid the 10% levee on sales price. This move closed a loophole created by dishonest sellers but honest sellers are now of course also left holding the bag (or better they are holding less of the sales price).

Paypall seems to have best deal in all of this. $40 basically without doing anything.
