https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/07/sports/cycling/gravel-biking-unbound.html I was psyched to see this as I am eagerly waiting on the delivery of a Unicorn ti gravel machine! I can't wait to get away from cars!

Habs, you will love it. I got mine a couple seasons ago. And, while I still ride pavement regularly, I tend to swap back and forth. It is so cool because it opens up routes you wouldn't really feel okay about doing on your road bike for fear of multiple flats or washing out a wheel but are perfectly comfortable on a gravel bike. Last Saturday I did a loop of just under 70 miles with two big climbs that I had done all pavement before except for one dirt mandatory part. This time, I added in long stretches of dirt connecting the pavement. Probably almost 50% was done on dirt and the paved parts were on the quieter sections re: cars. 68+ miles and about 6,400 vertical and about 30 miles of dirt with maybe a car every 10 minutes or so driving slowly with plenty of room to spare. Love it.

Have fun!

Couldn’t read the article got hit up w paywall. The Search Habitat remote gravel ride series had its 26th volume today, a Canadian Rockies ride. It’s a very lonely series with a participation of one on most rides.

I keep coming back alive on the other end. What are the odds?!

Yes you WILl enjoy gravel Hab. What took you so long?

Also what are your thoughts on handlebar bags?

That ride looks challenging as hell! What took so long? I guess my long history of enjoyment on the road bike? After my accident, I rebuilt the road bike (thank you insurance!) and have been riding normally outside since March. My brother reminded me of his friend who runs a shop nearby and recommended I get gravel or fat bike, whatever it took to get off the road. As I've noticed more incidences of close calls on the road, I finally reached out to him last month to set me up with a gravel bike, and here I am! I will have be experimenting for a while with my setup, so no thoughts on handlebar bags yet.

So you should know there’s a lot of awesome gravel in Spain (if that’s still a goal) and rest of Europe. VDP did a bunch of his Giro prep in Spain on gravel.

Yes that ride had a lot of single track, mud and downed trees. Then on return it was more MTB than gravel so I only managed the two scenic parts. Not a typical outing but sometimes there are good.

I know they're loads of gravel in Granada. We used to hike on them as a family frequently when we lived there. I am looking forward to returning at some point with my gravel bike!

Good. Good. We'd feel awful about blocking you but out of moral obligation we would.

The 'yet' is concerning, however

Au contraire, there’s a lot of promise in “yet”.

The three week road trip with gravel adventures across south BC and one in Alberta is done. Lots of dodging still questionable weather but overall it was excellent.

Never saw a bear on any of rides which is quite surprising given time of year (had a triple encounter locally about a month ago). Then today on final drive back I saw a grizzly and then a minute later a black bear cub.

After BluMoose 100 my bike looked roughly similar. Clay slick galore. It’s sticks like concrete on your frame. Luckily we finished as Kicking Horse where they have mountain bike trails and some good power hoses ready.
