Does anybody have a 500e yet? Does anyone have one of the 500 gas models? Good cars? I like the idea of an all electric to replace our 2001 Honda Insight at some point. EDIT: Ford Focus has an all e model too.

And there are other battery only powered cars in the US: Nissan Leaf, Toyota Rav4, Honda fit, Tesla model S. (And additional options in Europe I believe). If I were rich, as a bike nut I'd hold out for the Tesla model X which is due out in a year or so.

A little thread drift, sorry. Every time I see those Lamborgini ads off to the right I am reminded that I can do a straight trade, my house for a lower model car. But where would I put my bikes? And I guess I'd be eating out every meal. Now those nice leather seats? For sleeping in with my broken collarbone? Pretty nice!

Seriously though, I'll probably never own an electric car. 1) Will we ever see clean electricity generation delivered at an acceptable efficiency? 2) (and more real for me) I will never own more than one car. It has to do everything I won't rent or borrow a car or truck for. That includes (perhaps once every year or so) long distance drives. And 3) I rarely part with cars until they are "done"! My Toyota AllTrac appears to have a long ways to go.

We plan to keep driving the 2001 Honda Insight for as long as possible. Who knows what will be available when we actually buy a different car. My wife loves the look of the Fiat 500 and now that she knows it comes in an electric she has been all excited. lsd, pretty much all of auto manus make an electric now (VW has some cool concept e cars too) but the Fiat is the one my wife is excited about and as I posted, the neighbor's daughter drove up in her new Ford. Their other daughter has a Chevy Volt. 79, if we ever go full electric we will charge it with solar, we will always own a pickup and a car, I always keep autos until they are near done.

i saw one of those tesla sedans at the Y last week. it's an eye catcher without being over the top. i get the impression that fiats aren't that good based on some reviews i've read.

Electric cars are very 'locale and use specific' IMO. Heat would be a problem in NE winters. Conversely, how well does the AC hold up in hot locales?

They have a long way to go, so to speak. Best idea I have heard for extended use is 'battery swapping stations' where the entire battery pack is switched out in a relatively short time. Sort of a 'Blue Rino' for e cars.

I watched a so-so docu on N. Tesla on Netflicks the other week. Dude was a genius and a much better 'discoverer' (his preferred term) than businessman.

Tesla: Beautiful cars, great performance. I would never spend that kind of money on a car.

I have put down a deposit on one, as has my co-worker. At work they are putting in two class 2 220 volt charger stations, so I will be able to rapid charge...for FREE! Unlike most people, I will be buying, not leasing. That means I qualify for the $7500 fed tax credit, the $2500 State rebate, a promisied $2000 Fiat rebate, and perhaps an additional $1500 Fiat rebate to current VW owners. That brings the car cost down to about $20K. Killer good deal. Oh, and one other perk they are offering....12 days of free Enterprise car rental a year, for when you want to take a longer trip. And this is the big one,,,full access to the carpool lanes in California. That is a huge benefit.

And what mileage are we talking on a full charge. I know that depends on the terrain, but what are they advertising?

RNDDUDE, keep us posted!

Spud most e cars claim just over 100 miles per charge. Tesla is over 200 I think.

Why don't e cars have solar panels in the roof to charge the battery?

i think the roof of the car would need to be at least an acre. i think toyota had a panel on their roof but it maybe powered a fan to help cool the interior while parked.

Spud....87 miles/charge in mixed driving. My commute is 32 miles each way, so i should have no problems, plus being a diesel car owner, I know how to maximize fuel use. Plus I can 'top off' with 110V at home at night if needed.

This thread should probably get moved to off-topic......

That was what I meant to do initially but put it in Coffee Shop for some reason.

How many bikes can you fit in a Fiat 500e?
