sometimes before i ride i have some joint pain and i would like to take an advil or something to help get me out and riding. i overheard someone say that one of the common pain relievers messes with your hydration or maybe kidneys (i wasn't paying attention obviously). what's a good pain reliever to take before getting out on the bike, or rather which one don't take?

This was discussed earlier this year and I mentioned that pineapple core contains bromelain which helps neutralize and reduce the acid build up in joints that eventually cause arthritis.

I ride mostly in bigger gears than necessary and had had found myself with knee pain after long and fast rides. I started eating fresh pineapples daily. I slice and chop them in cubes and throw them in salad. Since then I have noticed a huge difference and feel very little pain in my knees now, as a matter of fact I had forgotten about the pain until I read this chain. They key is it has to be fresh and the most concentrated part of broelain is contained in the core. So eat up and enjoy, it’s not that bad at all.

p.s. Sliced grilled pineapple topped with Chinese seaweed sprinkled with sesame is an awesome side with any grilled meat especially if you like tuna or sword fish.

My doctor told me the simple guide was:
Ibuprofen = kidneys
Acetaminophen = liver

So, there is some concern with athletes taking ibuprofen and then training long and getting dehydrated and placing more strain on your kidneys. Same for acetaminophen and drinking.

Personally I don't think there's a problem with taking 200mg of advil and going for a ride if you stay hydrated. Or you could just take Tylenol. If anything, the latest thinking is that drugs like Ibuprofen should not be taken for inflamation caused by exercise because they hamper your bodies ability to grow and recover.

i love pineapple. i could eat it every day. what about dried? i guess that's not considered fresh.

what about plain old aspirin?

Got to be fresh unfortunately or should I say fortunately. If you plan on not eating it daily then eat it on an empty stomach as a snack for best result. As far as Aspirin, my doc and several others in the bizz have recommended one baby Aspirin (85mg) daily once you hit 50. Not there yet but got a jump start

You're not riding hard enough. Endorphins should block out all the pain.

hot bath in epsom salts is good old fashioned analgesic relief for aches & pains

Interesting that no one's mentioned chondroitin, which used to be quite popular, with a touch of real research to back that up. Seems like it's fallen out of favor?

the pain does go away after i've ridden a bit but the first 15 minutes or so are achy. it's so friggin hot here that hydration is important so i don't want to wreck my kidneys just to go ride. i'll try the pineapple. florida used to be a leading pineapple producer back in the day. i think a freeze wiped them out back at the turn of the last century.

zoot, before you ride?

Aspirin is close to God's gift for my knees. I rarely take it before I ride, but if my knees are feeling it after, I have no qualms with a 325 or 500mg. It does attack the stomach and cause ulcers. but the symptoms are pretty obvious.'

My knee issues are chrondomalacia patellae in both knees.  Been there 35 years.

My knees and hip used to give me a lot of pain and aspirin was part of my recovery routine. My ortho recommended glucosamine and chrondointim and my knee pain and noise went away after a few weeks. I know that the studies on its use were inconclusive but I have continued with it for over 10 years now. After starting the glucosamine I also started and have maintained 1-2 times per week strength plan in the gym that has also helped. Now most of my pain is just plain getting old or overdoing it.

I have chronic knee pain too. It has been diagnosed as osteoarthritis. A couple of years ago, I saw a post by Tai (Kid Wok) regarding a poster presentation at one of his arthritis symposia involving the role of vitamin D3 in both OA and RA. I started taking D3 (4000 IU daily), and the knee pain subsided. I could actually start running again, which is good since impact exercise is important for bone strength.
I prefer ibuprofen (ie, Advil or Motrin) over acetaminophen (ie, Tylenol) because of its mode of action. Ibuprofen treats both pain and inflammation whereas acetaminophen only helps with pain. The inflammation can continue unabated and exacerbate the pain after the drug wears off. Aspirin is not as effective for inflammation as ibuprofen.
I tried the chondroitin/glucosamine combo, but it did not help in my case.
