Dale Stetina, dad of Peter Stetina, was critically injured on Colorado's Lefthand Canyon, near Boulder.

He came out to a club race his Olympic year, '76 and chatted with one and all thoughout the race. Carried himself like a gentleman, a perfect representative for his sponsor. (7-11? It was the biggie of the day.) I always felt he was a class act.
I hope he pulls through this. Sounds worse but similar to my accident in '77. He gets to benefit from big advances in head injury trauma but he certainly has more physical damage than I saw.

Anyone know of what Dale did after his successful cycling career? He seemed less willing or able to blend with the corporate world than his big brother Wayne. At one point I thought he wrote a feisty book arguing against eating meat. His Dad was a classic overbearing sports father/coach back in the day - 2nd was no better than 5th, and would take his kids 2nd place winnings and trade with the 5th to make the point. Yow.

Sounds encouraging. And now, a lot less serious than mine though time will tell. (I spent 5 days in a coma that was not drug induced, was in seizure from a bruise on the base of my spine and did not respond to anything until perhaps the last day in coma, or so they tell me.)

Have any of you heard how (and what) Dale is doing these days? I searched on-line and saw nothing more recent than his rehab days. (Ad-blocker is sometimes a curse.)
Six years. Coming to the end of the dark days. A dear friend told me three months after my accident that it would be a full 7 years. She was right. 7 years and 2 weeks I was driving across country to go back to my university to re-take my undergrad courses so I could get back into my profession.
Dale is one of those classy people, one of those we are all better off for having. I hope he can share the gifts he has acquired from this last chapter of his life to help others. (And doing that might spare him the dark path I traveled.)

| Notes from back in the day: Dale and Wayne were heavily managed by their domineering father. If you are old enough to remember 2nd = 5th and donuts, you understand. Back to the newsprint not interweb days: Gone and long lamented Competitive Cycling, the left coast alternative to buttoned down back then Vermont based Velonews had a ton of fun with the Stetina family dynamic. Both bros were in both papers often because both were really fast. But their Kinda evil daddy discouraged going to The Show in Europe rather tham being a big fish in a small pond here. Wayne was more willing or able to fit in, and it was no surprise to me that he won a bunch of crits (because that was we did here back then) and subsequently landed on his post racing feet with a long career with a major money player (Shimano). IMO Dale had far more potential as a Euro style road racer than his brother, but I'm not sure he was ever all in. Dale always was the rebel, to his dad, to the system, to The Man, whatever. He had bigger goals, e.g. he wrote a feisty book excoriating meat in the diet (and that is saying it nicely), etc etc.
As for Peter, I wish him the best. |

| Sounds terrible. I did a search on brain stem injuries. His breathing and heart rate is strong, so he might stand a good chance of recovery. I wish him and his family well. |
