It turns out, first of all, the likelihood of getting seriously injured in any bike crash on any particular bike trip is extremely low — it’s like one in a hundred thousand. In every single case, without a single exception, the health benefits of cycling far outweigh the traffic dangers or the health costs of cyclists.

I'm sure most of my family looks and me and says, "That guy has a death wish. Why doesn't he just sit on the couch, drive to work, smoke, etc, like the rest of us? Moron."

I never say cycling is safe but it must be safe enough cuz I do it and I let my kids do it.

Agree with OC. I read the article a couple of days ago and was underwhelmed. It seemed to be written for an audience for whom cyclists are a curiosity. Most of the NYT articles on health/fitness are aimed at a general audience.

You can't trust a doctor to tell us how dangerous it is or isn't. No one goes to the hospital because they rode to work and almost had an accident. Doctors only see the injured and have a skewed perception. Kind of like cyclist saying all those car drivers are trying to run us down, or motorists that claim all cyclist run stop signs and red lights. No one notices the reasonable man.

I dabble in both the bike business and in motorcycle business. At the Interbike I see funky collar bones and fresh pink scar tissue on arms and legs. At the AIM Expo and other motorcycle shows I see guys in wheelchairs.

I am sure doctors see many more motorist in the Trauma room but no one says they will quit driving? Doctors see more head injuries from the home and they don't advocate everyday helmet use?
Safety is an illusion of the uninjured and danger is the view of those hurt or afraid. I am betting that just about every possible human action has at some time been responsible for a death. Going up or down a stairwell might be the end for you. Cycling is safe enough for me. Now base jumping. That is not safe
