That's it! I've had it! Out for a ride when pulling up to a red light just as it turns green. As the cars are just starting to move I come up on a white Subaru Legacy with a couple of bike trays on the roof. This Phucking A$$hat has phone in hand and texting while driving. As loud as I could, yelled "GET OFF THAT PHUCKING PHONE." Embarrased driver puts the phone down and proceeds to drive down the road. Looks like I'll be purchasing a Go-Pro to wear while I ride, so I can start to report these D-Bags to the police with video evidence.

The cynic in me says the police won't do a damn thing.

We are a nation built on consumerism, and the consumption must continue despite its hazards.

Couple of weeks ago, I was stuck behind a cab driver who was doing 15mph BELOW the speed limit. This was at rush hour and there was a whole line of cars stacking up behind us (Iwas driving, not riding).

Road becomes two lanes and I move around him (on the right because he took the left lane) and sure enough, he is texting and driving. Dyot. I honk and motion / yell at him to watch the road and put the phone down.

We end up next to each other at the light and he rolls his window down "What were you saying?" "Pu the fooking phone down!!!" Dude starts yelling at me, but I am gonna turn right at the intersection, so I don't really care.

He accelerates infront of me and then jams on the brakes, causing me to hit the brakes and stop. He sits there for 5 secs and then leaves.

I mentioned this was a taxi, right? Grab his cab number, call the company and tell them what happened. I verified his location from their GPS system. They said he would be suspended and if it happened again, terminated.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Yeah last night riding home on the bike route is some ding dong playing with his phone with earbuds plugged in no light on his bike. Wasn't quite dark yet but it was foggy with low low visibility. Don't need a car to be a douchebag.

But, Andy, those douchebags ridng 20 pound vehicles tend to kill only themselves. Not right (or any help to the rest of us who ride responsibly) but still, very different.

I started paying attention recently to drivers who do/don't stop at stop signs. 75% don't actually stop unless there is cross traffic. 10% barely slow down.

Yeah Ben until some one driving has to avoid them and hits a pedestrian, or another cyclist or when he riding at me and that was another rider another time riding more and more into my path until I yelled at the donkey and I have to take evasive action and get schmucked as a result. No Ben wrong is wrong. Put the toys away people.

Andy, not justifying cyclists. Just saying what other cyclists do on their bikes pales compared to operating 2 or more tons of steel at speeds up to 60 mph or more in negligent fashion.

But Ben, that moron cyclist is liable to jump in his car and continue his moron habits. A moron is a moron is a moron, no matter how they propel themselves.

Sadly, the world is stuck with these morons. Kinda like a steel yard that has to hire the less intelligent as operators of motorized equipment. BUT, that company does get to see to it that they drive the street sweepers and not the heavy lift cranes. And bumping and knocking over a pile of steel stock and breaking somone's leg through carelessness with that sweeper carrying a lighter penalty than carelessly dropping a 400 ton steel assembly and killing a worker or three? I have little trouble with that. Those who step up to operate dangerous equipment for high pay (or ultimate convenience) should be held to higher standards.

Oh yeah.. Missed green lights many times because somebody decided it was more important to spend their time at the light texting rather than paying attention - and does not notice a light turning green, blocking all traffic in their lane. So many times I have driven by cars stopped 5 cars back from the light and not clue that traffic is moving. We need snipers at intersections to deal with these people.

of course the more dangerous ones are those who shift lanes while oblivious to all traffic around them. I've learned to be careful of EVERYONE. Position on the road is no indication whatsoever of the drivers intent.

The most crazy was the guy who drove through a red right in front of me, while holding his phone at eye level with both hands, texting away. He did not even notice the red light. indeed, I don't think he ever knew he ran it. Completely random that he did not hit anyone.

Even so, I'll have to say that I have much more trouble with cyclists being completely oblivious to all traffic rules. Many, many times I have had close calls (driving and cycling) when cyclists blow stop lights and stop signs at full speed, no concern whatsoever for anyone already in the intersection. it seems universal now that all cyclists run all stop signs and most red lights (except, curiously, grade school kids, who are just learning, and following the rules). And when I say "run" I mean at speed. No slowing down to check traffic - just blow through. After all, cyclists are immune to the rules, right?

I wish cops would write more tickets for this. Should be easy pickins, actually. Here's a map showing current fines, FWIW
