Smokey.
Indeed the riding around Orange County is really good, I actually go up there to ride often.
I was referring more to the Kingdom trails then the road riding, however the road riding up there in VT is really nice as well, and I think better then OC, not saying it's worth the 7 hour drive, but if you are already up there, you might as well ride.
I am in Brooklyn.

Ditto Orange County. Strafford, tunbridge vershire, Newbury, Chelsea, etc. just gorgeous on two wheels. But you likely will be satisfied with the Kingdom trails. Remember that the west side of,the network is an esker, lots of sand, so drains better when wet. The east side is more epic. Lot of slimy roots.

vtguy, when I raced it in '78 as a 3, I remember passing 2s who started 2 minutes ahead of us. They were weaving back and forth, using the whole road. Our pace car, that local cop, was trapped behind him. My moment of glory: leading the race and passing the pace car!

In '77, David Lamb, a junior, caught us 3 & 4s, then lead us up the Notch riding a (Florida) 15-19 block.

Most of my riding on the Kingdom Trails has been on a 29er hard tail and it worked fine. Any deficiencies are mine and not my bike's. That said, there are always a few sections where I miss my Fat Chance Yo Eddy-- it was just more agile. I rode my cross bike once on some of the easier trails and it was a lot of fun. As long as you have two wheels, it's impossible not to have a good time.

The trail tread is so variable, with long smooth bits suitable for a cross bike mostly on the west side, and root fests on both sides. Any bike with a good fork will. I'm a sit and spin type rider and have been been happiest with a 29er dualie.

Id say by all means a 29er Hard tail would be the best weapon for those trails.
