i've got (had) 3 working bikes, an old cannondale road bike that's next on the list to get replaced, an old steel mtb that retired to become my commuter/tourer with fenders and a rack, and a steel hardtail mtb that is my favorite ride of the 3. i recently broke the favored mtb frame which sent me into a funk. it could be fixed/replaced but it would take money away from the new road bike fund. after pouting for a while, i tightened up and striped down the commuter frame and transferred all my off road parts onto it. i rode it yesterday and it's still a sweet ride. best ride i've had in a while. now i'm down a commute so this morning i rode the road bike in to work. uncomfortable but not too bad for such a short ride. now i'm waiting to leave for lunch but it's pouring rain. once it stops the road will still be wet and i've got no fenders on the road bike. i guess they're not problems but opportunities. |

If I were in your shoes I'd have my eyes out for a steel bike/frame from the '80s. A horizontally dropped sport bike, maybe even one set up around 27" tires. Then you can go 700c, any tires and fenders easily. (Mafac Racers will handle the reach no sweat. Free to $10 from a shop's used parts box, $50 near new with a Peugeot UO-8 attached.)
My winter fixie started as a UO-8, got a Japanese built Schwinn sport frame, then Sekine, Miyata and now a Trek 420. The Trek frame is a winner. Great ride, great set-up.

Skinny, I have two bikes in line for replacement. I've decided that Jessica, my first fun fixie has done its miles. Close to 8000, two hard crashes (broken bones). All that on a frame hit hard by a car under the previous user. Also my geared winter truck, a Schwinn Letour, US built, heavy! The fixie may just go as I have Jessica J, the custom ti bike to replace it. A lighter frame and good crankset could go a long way yo making the geared bike a nicer ride. (The Sora I put on it works well but weighs a ton! I should get a magnet and check it. I suspect it is steel.)

| i've got another old road frame that is going to become the commuter, temporarily i hope. i would rather use an mtb frame though as i have wider tires and disk brakes that i pulled off the old commuter. i guess it's not a problem that money won't solve, except i have none at the moment. the salsa fargo would be ideal. |

| This thread reminds me that from 1992 till 2002 the only bike I owned was a cheap Giant Yukon MTB that acted as my road bike. All I could afford. I briefly owned a $100 2nd hand road bike but on one of the first rides accelerating out of a corner I ripped half the spokes out of the rear wheel. That was the end of that piece of crap. Seems like ages ago. Spoiled now. |
