Bob Mionske discusses the challenges that we have re: getting justice for distracted driving hits.
We already know well most of what he says, But he also challenges the racing community to speak up, pointing out that NASCAR has a far louder voice and message (and we are the ones that really need it).
I am fully guilty here of staying far too silent. I have known a long time the end of my days may well be from a too close pass. I spend roughly an hour a day riding. Maybe a couple hundred passes/ride. Times 365 so 70,000 passed/year or maybe a million more in my lifetime. The odds are good that one of those drivers will be distracted and a few feet too far to the right.
All sobering. Maybe this will get me more active in our local bike/ped/etc. safety organization, Street Trust (which used to be Bicycle Safety Alliance).

| Amen I hear you. I've been been riding seriously since I retired at age 56 in 1998. I'm now 75. I did not think i would be riding past age 70. I am for the first time getting a little timid about riding our local roads. Traffic has increased. Most folks are careful, some are even afraid to pass me. But once and a while I will get brushed by some bonehead and I know it is intentional. It used to bother me a little, lately it is all I think about when I ride. Taking the joy away. I starting riding with a front and rear light, I'm lit up like a Christmas tree. |

It's best not to treat this as a cycling centric issue but as an overall societal problem. Better progress will be made that way.
Vulnerable Road User laws and strict enforcement of those is where it's at. Real consequences. |

| Any suggestions regarding how to move this forward? I reside in a very red region that is not insanely anti everything new, but is reflexively money first quality of life second. Many of the local players lbs actuathave a beating heart. Thanks |

Some of the local pols have a beating heart but are very cautious of crossing the tea partiers and various haters. Thanks
