Who didn't have the hots for her back in the day?

Holy schitt....how did we miss this when VeloNews had an article about (according to Dale's linked article)? This is truly shocking and hearbreaking....not that every homeless story isn't, but obviously this hits closer to home for those of us who followed her back in the day (and yes, had a crush on her). To this day, I remember her saying that ice cream the night before a race made her sluggish on race day....and I still avoid it the night before my races. I would love to see a company like Zwift or Strava reach out to her and get her a job and help get her the help she needs. She is clearly very intelligent but can't fit within the confines of a traditional 9-5 job. |

Obviously from the article there's some deep rooted things like relationship with her mother that go back to her youth, pre-cycling career even. What also stands out is that her family is in Seattle but she's still homeless. Suggests to me that there may not be an "easy" fix like giving her a job that better suits her. |

Oh, no doubt there is no "easy" fix....that was why I said hopefully they can help get her the help she needs. It will take MUCH more than a job....lots of therapy, etc. will also be required. But a job would (hopefully) entail health insurance, which would open the door to getting into therapy. Seems pretty clear to me that whatever inner demons she is fighting were the key to her success on the bike, as well as being a destructive force in her personal life / post-cycling world. |

I saw that. So messed up. I had no idea about her being basically kicked out of her house as a kid. When I was a junior, they combined the junior men with the elite women at a 7-11 sponsored criterium in Babylon, Long Island in the early '80's, so I was actually in a race with her...crazy. N |

I agree, it is inner demons. And just getting someone a job is not always the fix. My son, who had a job a home and long term relationship finally lost his battle to his demons. It's like a wire that is cut and they can't get it connected again. Because of his job he has been given every chance. He is still fighting, It's hard to understand. |

Sorry to hear. Hope you son will be able to reconnect the wires. It's a tough thing to watch knowing you can't do anything to help. |

Sorry to hear that, mondonico. I can’t imagine what it is like to watch your child struggle like that. Wishing you and your family the best. |

Thanks. Where I live in CA I see homeless people on every Main Street and wondered why. Now I understand better but still have no ideas on how one changes that. It's a disease that is so confusing. Is that a dumb statement. LOL |
