Stay healthy. Ride! (I'm spending this afternoon listening to the Rose Bowl and designing a canti fork-mounted hanger for the Mooney. (I want it to be considerably higher than the ones I've seen because I really like the braking with the hanger hung high.) |

My wife and I moved from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Bike's been in storage for months, and will continue to be, as we live a life of AirBNBs, house shopping, etc.
Less sun, less warmth, more oxygen, fewer goat heads. :-)

Welcome to Canada.
That is quite the change in scenery and climate.
“Coldest winter I’ve ever had was the summer I spent on the Atlantic”. New Foundland but still. There was the hot rock sleeping bag incident intended to stay warm but which smoked my leg. The running joke is that my wife tried to kill me with that hot rock. We were married about a year back then. |

I've sailed to, from and within Nova Scotia and Newfoundland twice each. Nova Scotia - Bras d'Or Lake for a week with my dad. Easy sailing, warm, comfortable. No wet except going in to swim (in water that was not cold! For that part of the world and salt water - a rare commodity!) Scottish hospitality to be found everywhere.
Last time to N.S. was when my dad called, concerned He'd just lost his cousin to a toothache and it would be just him and two who did not know the boat to sail it back to Massachusetts. (He'd been passing on to me all my life how vulnerable small sailboats are in the washing machine waters between N.S. and the US mainland sailing across the shipping lane to the Bay of Fundy. The dangerous span would be longer than my dad wanted to stand watch (at well into his 60s).
So I got a plane ticket to Halifax, got to the boat and learned crew #3 had called to say he couldn't make it. We were waiting for #4. Nothing. Dad was on a schedule. Not getting back was going to cost him a lot. He looked at me and asked if I was up to doing it, just us. This would be my third ocean sail on the boat. I'd stood solo watches in storms. Sure. Uneventful passage. Yes a few hours in the washing machine. My stomach wasn't entirely happy. Then light winds and easy sailing. After about 50 hours we entered Sandy Bay off northern Massachusetts from the open Atlantic. I grew up sailing there but had never done that before.
Didn't spend much time in N.S. on land and haven't had a lot of contact with locals, but strong impressions never-the-less, just not the usual ones. |

Thanks OC. Growing up in NYC, we spent summers on Cape Breton Island.
79, that sounds awesome. The most "adventurous" sailing I was ever part of was overnight on the Long Island Sound.
Our son (only child) got married and moved to Seoul, so we've all just scattered around the planet. LOL.

| Hope you enjoy Halifax despite the winters. My wife and I visited Halifax a couple of years ago. Beautiful city, full of energy. Lots of apartments going up. Excellent university, too. |

Thanks dudes. Will do. I mean, winter, is well winter. I grew up with it most of my life. To be honest with temps getting warmer, is was too hot for me in Albuquerque for about three months a year. Wasn't like that when we first got there. Used to be the rare 100 degree day, and eventually it was that hot multiple times per week for a lot of the summer.

Cape Breton - funny, that is where the other attempt on my life occurred that same trip. We almost got trampled by a moose and her calf on a hike. We visited Halifax that same trip but honestly don't remember much of it other than visiting a friend.
Your politics should also get a little bit more moderate. It seems to revolve mostly around the perpetual conflict between native and commercial lobster fisheries. Biking wise, not sure if you've been, but if not, check out Route Verte in Quebec. Infinite opportunities. |

Before being an old guy who rides sometimes, I was racer, but before that I was a bikepacker tourist. I went on an AYH trip in the early '80's in New Brunswick. Camped on the Bay of Fundy, and saw whales. Totally cool.

Some how, some way, this site is still alive, and my login, with an unused email still works.
Well, now a happy 2023. I've ridden my road bike once in Nova Scotia since I got here, two years ago. I've ridden my "around town" bike a couple of dozen times. However, I went speed skating for the first time ever. Hey, when in Rome.
Got some "touring" short track fixed blade "cheaper" skates, and wen to "The Oval": our free, public, outdoor refrigerated regulation long track.
It was open holiday skate, and my first time on speed skates, and first time on skates in 20 years. I just learned like any other kid.
So I rode the line between the good skaters, and the kids wiping out. So I could attempt to glide with a little speed, and not get in the real skaters' way. I looked UGLY, but only fell once.
It's actually disturbingly warm here right now. No frozen lakes anywhere. That's what I was really looking forward to.

| If you want frozen lakes you should have moved to Saskatchewan or Manitoba Lol. Maybe northern Ontario or Quebec. Nova Scotia seems too Atlantic for it to be properly cold. Cold summers, yes, per above. |
