Hi Keith, I hope you're well. We've been getting a lot of notes lately about the rising SPAM levels in the forum. Our development team tells me they've had an increase to more than 60k spam messages this month, many of those getting past the filters. The development team and I don't have the capacity to actively manage the forums and maintain a good user experience. Thus, we've made the decision to pull the plug on the forums. I want to say that I appreciate your efforts to guide the conversation and keep out the riff-raff on the forum. I wish we could keep it going, but in a world of limited resources, we simply don't have the manpower to keep ahead of the spammers at this point. Please forward my appreciation to the other moderators, if there are any left. I will also post a message in a few minutes to the forum, informing users of the move. The forum will be closing soon. I don't know if it will be this hour, today, or this week, but our folks in San Diego will be pulling the plug soon. I hope you understand. Cheers

2,000 spam messages a day, every day.

WTF?

They already removed the link from their home page - the forum itself is still live at this moment though

We've seen things most people wouldn't believe. Personal attacks like fire off the shoulder of Orion. We watched spearoflance and bandmembers twitter in their darkness near Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain. Time for it to die.

Yet thousands of other sites have forums and have little to no trouble. It would have been better if he was honest and just said, "we don't give a rip". Maybe it won't affect their bottom line because we were a small group but I haven't gone back to the vn site since we moved here.

and just think - a simple spam preventing program that a technical 8th grader could have alleviated that issue 100%

seems to be about half of the participation here than at VN....

I'm curious. How do they keep spammers out of their comment sections after an article and why would that not of worked for the forum?

Got out before the ship went down.

I see about 160 names on here that I recognize as 'regulars' from VN, which aint bad. I wonder how many lurkers are now lurking here without registering.
Participation on the forum from the people who have registered over here doesn't seem as high yet though.

I like that everyone who's posting over here is playing nice. Hopefully if it stays civil over here like it has so far, with good conversation about cycling in general, it'll build back up. The personal attacks originating from a small group of posters that were allowed to go on over there was one of the things that drove people away.

yes, call Ripley's that the douche contingency has not raised their collective head here [yet]. Amazing. And rather nice. Goes to show that a few assclowns can have a significant [negative] affect on a board

They have their facebook posters on almost every article on their main page. So, what use was the forum for them? No use at all. Not surprising they gave it up. Indeed, they probably forgot about it years ago and were surprised to find it still existed!

The drawback to using Facebook as the source for comments is that they are limited to the stories published on the site itself. With the forum, you could ask a question about just about anything. I remember asking about construction loans, so it didn't have to be a technical question. The advice I received was very helpful. I found the most of the forumites were very well educated and knowledgable in their chosen field. Sure, there was a small group of complete crazies (with one of them using no-less-than 7 screennames!), but you'll get that with any sampling of the general public.

Anyhow, the biggest loss is the ability to post a topic about anything.

CERV, we have it on good authority that there are only about 10 of us. (I forget the source; flicker?) What you are seeing is the approximately 16 apiece usernames each of us are using.

If I seem a little spacier than usual, it's because I am trying to keep all mine straight. It's hard!

i quit going to the Velonews forum due to the idiocy of a few of the posters like polish, 7th spear, etc... is there anyway that they can be actually kept away from ruining this forum at all? is there any way to block them if they do somehow manage to worm their way into here? i'm glad the velonews forum is done, it served it's purpose for a long time but really went downhill due to a couple of the circle jerks there. this is better.

Well, I have moderator functions, but Steve is in charge of who gets access to the forum and who doesn't.

i would hope that because this site is a personal endeavor instead of a corporate one, if it has an infiltration of lunatics, it would be much easier to get them banned.

geosurf, we've had a poster who has been a real asset to this forum for years who has posted forever using two usernames. terrapin and Torte Volante. I don't see the issue; as long as that person is up front about it. (I believe that poster used both because one computer was her work computer, but that is just speculation.) Now, terrapin and Torte Volante never carried on dialogs with each other, at least on line!

IIRC, one of terrapin/Torte Volante's identities was expressly for moderator duties, but I think she posted using either one.

Bummer. Clearly the folks at Velonation have launched their site with the forethought, tools, and systems to address the rise of spam.

And frankly I like Spam, Spam, Eggs, and Spam!

@jpouchet - tx, but it's simple, manually approve people to keep the spammers out. there will be a delay, but that's the price for keeping the forum in order for everyone

@geosurf - if someone gets out of hand we'll take the appropriate action...

It is rather sad. Though I rarely posted, I did check in once a day or so to see what folks were discussing. I've learned quite a bit from the regular posters at VN, and am glad to see many of those regulars here. Mark
