Well I don't spend as much time here as I used to over at VN. Still use VN for a lot of my daily cycling news. Prefer their content and layout.
But this forum rocks by contrast. Much easier too navigate and use. Still need to learn the short cuts for URLs / links / photos.
However from a personal perspective I spend way more time on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
Tweets are pretty much useless for anything more than PR and quick updates. Too much voume and noise for realy communication.
Facebook and LinkedIn each have pros and cons. FB is restricted by some companies and others restrict LinkedIn (afraid they may lose people?)
Anyway - my 2 cents. I'll be around when I can.

KR - LinkedIn is a Tweet on supper steroids. Allows for significant marketing / PR content.
Some of the industry groups are good for developing a dialog. However you won't find too many 50+ exchanges. |

linkedin came in handy while looking for a job, mainly to find companies that had the kind of position I was looking for in the area. knowing somebody who knows somebody was huge for me. It's also interesting to see people change jobs, to keep tabs on people you've worked with but aren't necessarily social with and to have an easy way to contact them about hiring (both directions, i.e. when we are hiring or when they are hiring). It's certainly not the be-all/end-all but for me it's a valuable piece of the employment puzzle in my field (electronics engineering).
All of the facebook like aspects of it (such as posting and "liking") are a little weird though. |

| Yes, this is a better forum. I use Velonation and cylingnews for news now with a little pez tossed in for distractions. The writing at vn went stale for me and NR became a douche so I only went there for the forum. I haven't been back since we made the move here. I tried to like redkiteprayer but it just didn't do it for me. I used to check bike radar but most of it is on cyclingnews now (they have a co-op). Mountain bike fiction went to crap several years ago which was painful for me. And that's my bike web site review. |

Hey jmdirt - hear your pain on MTB sites. Despite the shear number of riders I see out almost every day it seems few are active on cycling forums. I just hoked-up by accident with a local guy, manages Kawasaki's data center which is 100% in my line of work, who single-handidly built a 100+ person MTB emailing list. Why? because no one was using the same social media app, forum etc. But everyone has email.
I ran a chuch-based cycling group on Yahoo for many years. Ended up going away as again, lack of on-line activity and people only wanted to get ride emails. For which they rarely ever showed up! |
