Waiting for the full details to come out of the investigation. One of my local riding buddies, I was riding MTBs with him and other riders involved on the Fourth. Today Kurt lost his life in what may have been a failed component on his road bike or a simple case of high-speed error. Knowing Kurt's solid bike handling skills and. Familiarity with the road I doubt he just rode straight through the turn and went headlong into a wall.. Two other good buddies were with him when it happened..one was right by his side going into the turn when it happened.. Silverado Canyon Road in OC..I was considering the ride but went with another Saturday group ride instead..as it was I came through the connecting main road, Santiago Canyon, with my neighbor when we saw an ambulance coming out from the Silverado direction about the time we later learned Kurt was going to the ER.. Apparently he was somewhat alert but with massive internal head injuries. Helmet did its best but the impact blew it to pieces. Fortunately Kurt passed fairly quickly in the hospital. His wife was able to get there in time to be by his side. I will share more details as they become available. This one really hurts! JP

Oh my, that is just awful. Can't even imagine how difficult that must have been for his wife to be there next to him when he passed. Even though we have many internal and external struggles during our day-to-day lives, these kind of stories just reinforce that we should never take what we have for granted. It can go away in the blink of any eye.

Hang in there, JP. Continue to ride because you love it. He would have wanted you to.

Thanks folks. Did a little solo ride this AM to spend some time with my thoughts. Then hammered a strava segment that was tailor-made for Kurt's power style of riding. I was chasing him the whole way.

The way I see it the Heaven Cycling Team just got a lot stronger. Guess Jesus was looking for the best lead-out man he could find.

I tried out for that team to be their climber when I was at my best, but they said "Try again later. You're not there yet."

This thread reminds me how narrow the path is for skinny tired fast bicycles. It take very little for things to go very wrong. But that narrow path is so sweet. Be careful, all.

Good for you to ride for your friend today.

My condolences.

Morbid but true; since my bike accident back in 05 that almost crippled me I always tell myself before I get on my bike that this maybe my last, so enjoy it.

Update: though an article is posted on The Register, it is behind a pay-per-view firewall.

I did find this reference. It mentions the snapped bolt to stem face. Hold off reaching conclussions as the bike, stem, and all hardware are being investigated.

First-hand accounts from my buddy riding right next to him include the sound of 'something snapping' and then watching as Kurt's bars went in a crazy direction as the bike exited the turn straight into the building wall.
