Doping vs train crossing. Both are braking established rules to gain an advantage or keep up while risking your life. Sure one is done in the heat of the moment the other done in a back room but they basically seem the same. Riders are willing to do whatever it takes

Not sure what the insurance rules are in Europe but here in the U.S. My company has the right to fire me on the spot for not following the safety rules. It is all about insurance claims / law suits. If I get hurt while doing my job and they can be shown to not have established a safe working environment they are screwed.

I would think that as the insurer of a bike team I might be putting in a call to the team about canceling thier policy.

The UCI established a safe working condition , do not go under the barriers . At my work if you didn't get fired for not following the safety rules and risking your life, you at least get some time off without pay to "think" about it.

Not quite the same. The train crossing is the equivalent of committing a foul in a ball game and hoping the ref let's you get away with it. The UCI hardly provided a safe environment or establish the rule of law; instead we saw a major kock up when it comes to controlling the biggest one day race on the calendar; and the second botched attempt at neutralisation in a Worldtour event in a year span after the Stelvio stage last year.

For the first 10 or so riders to cross the heat of moment argument holds; hard to hit brakes full on as those barriers come down. For the last 40 no excuses, they had already stopped and had to get around the barriers. What is shows though is that these riders have zero faith in ability of race officials to neutralize the race and keep things fair; that's why they took the leap across.

There is some truth to that. Breaking the rules in the middle of competition is different than breaking them outside competition.

However I still think it shows to what lengths the peleton will go to , to not get left behind.

How much of a leap is it from risking your life and breaking the rules to cross under a barrier to doping ?

Degenkolb went across and he's about as strong anti-doping as you can get.

To me this is predominant a UCI issue. Sporza commentators were saying the entire incident was entirely preditable; with 10min race delay and knowing train schedule they new peleton was going to coincide with train yet they failed to put race officials in sufficient numbers at crossing to control things.

Kind of like running a hockey game without refs and hoping it not to turn into an all out fist fight. Adrenaline makes you stupid. Heck sometimes I cross through barriers and I am just racing to work. (Edit - Dale LOL)

Really is it so hard to schedule the trains just for one day so that they dont coincide with the riders at any given point along the course when perhaps the biggest one-day race of the year is run?

Race was almost 30 minutes ahead of schedule...pretty hard to ask the TGV to schedule around a pretty big, variable window.

At the end of the day, it is still just a bike race.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!
