CK - I don't think it has anything to do with the Giro's crisis (if someone running away with a bunch of money is that)...more likely it being the 10th anniversary of Pantani's death in 2014.

strikes me as a case of the italians seeking to salve their conscience after really turning on him once his PED usage hit the surface. the italian authorities had him on the perp walk on numerous occasions, and his trials were circuses, exacerbating his descent into non-PED drug use and depression. i'm of the opinion that two wrongs don't make a right.

Despite the howlings emanating from the Hypocrisy Police, Pantani was a tortured soul who wore his flaws on his sleeve. He was the troubled everyman who flew too close to the sun in search of fame, fortune and adulation. People relate to that moreso than some amoral shill in search of new revenue steams to enhance his corporate stature. The difference should be clear. If you can't ascertain the difference it's only because you don't want to.
