http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/chris-horner-out-of-vuelta-a-espana-due-to-low-cortisol-levels well I'm not sure what to make of this. Seems like Chris was just pushing the limit between getting oral steroids and suppressing his own adrenal glands as a result - which is the reason for low cortisol. He was just not recovered. Or....

I wonder how many normal controls exist for 40+ year old pro tour riders. Not saying he's clean. I'm not saying anyone is clean.

Feel bad for him. He got zero recognition for the Vuelta win. Starts the next season gets hit by a car, now this. Oh and sick at the tour.

I feel bad for Horner as well. This is a tough break. According to a Velonews article, here is how he handled the news:
With the enormity of the news of his Vuelta scratch, Horner searched for solace in the only place he knows, the bike.

“I found out this morning, so I went out and rode my bike for six hours,” Horner said. “It’s the best thing to do. It clears the head. It’s where I feel most comfortable, either riding my bike or hanging out with my wife. For me, the best thing to do was to ride six hours. It’s a great day. The countryside is fantastic. … If you had spoken to me this morning, it would have been a bit ugly. When you’re out training six hours, you realize life is not that bad.”

-- he is right. Thank G-d I can ride my bike. It really is cathartic. Hey -- he still is a GC winner and no one will be taking that away. Prolly time to retire. I mean all the crashes, punctured lungs, broken ribs, low cortisol -- Father Time is sending a message. Heck of a career
