How fookin' stoopid do you have to be to even consider meeting with Ferrari?

not too surprised. Ferrari doesn't seem to see any problems with working to "keep cyclists healthy" and the "Russian" teams seem to behave in the mold of Putin, i.e. rules don't seem to apply. The UCI renewed the Katusha license in '13 and they'll almost certainly renew the Astana license.

Not sure if it was a great idea for Nibali to sign through 2016, however.

The UCI didn't renew Katusha's license; CAS told UCI to reinstate their license after UCI took it away.

Russians and doping...sure, maybe. Yes report of widespread (organized) Russian doping for winter games. But the Ruski's hardly ran away with the gold medal count. Which means that the others are probably just as hard at it.

sarcasm aside -- Does Nibali have an out to ride elsewhere if the team doesnt get a license? I seem to recall that he does

Yes, VN can leave if Astana doesn't get WT. Where will he go though? Money is spent and rosters are full. Tinkov-Saxo could pay, but they would have to can someone. Maybe he could ride with Horner at Safeway.

Astana looks screwed.

How old is Nib's? We might have an opening on my masters team.

First kit is free plus we get a smoking deal from one of the local bike shops on Specialized bikes.

Do you have a cyclocross opening too? Boom may be looking for options. He signed with them for next year.

After today things are looking downright bleak.

We mostly race cx so Boom would be welcome. As a side note, I met him several years ago when he was doing support for Rabobank at the tour of Missouri. He autographed the tope tube of my Bianchi cx bike.

So on the day that 17 Astana riders are linked to Ferrari, the UCI rewards them with a World Tour license.

Well done, Cookson.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

To be fair to Cookson he's made it clear that today's decision did not take into account today's news, and that this new information will be investigated. He's trying to follow due process which I think is good even though the optics suck.

Yes, screwed. If there are more dirty riders, the UCI has no option but to suspend their license.

Questions for the forum:
Is it time for the anti-doping idealists to aim their pitchforks and torches at Nibali?
Or, for us more jaded types: Is Astana's infraction too much doping, or simply too much getting caught? (these are definitely NOT the same thing!)

Oh, I fully get that it is a horrific coincidence..... but you had 5 Astana riders test positive in the months leading up to now. Riders on a team being run by one of the most unrepentant dopers of his era. There was plenty of reason not to grant their license this year.

CK, is Nibali in your crosshairs?

So far, there has really been no direct evidence against him.

But I'd be lying if I said my eyebrows weren't raised just a touch, at this point.

2 riders really if you consider that 3 cases were development team, UCI being unable to conclusively link the two and Vino making the right damage control move (for show most likely) of effectively firing the junior squad. I am guessing UCI didn't want to burn themselves in same way as with Katusha.

Its a case where everyone knows what's going on but you still have to prove it. But I think this comment is right on the mark: Race Radio ‏@TheRaceRadio – I could be wrong but I don't think Astana will make it an entire season with their license intact. I doubt they will make it to the Tour.
