Is this some kind of a joke or are the Italian organizers totally out of touch with reality and gone mad. Imagine a bunch of organizers brain storming around a table as how they can make the upcoming Giro memorable and special…. suddenly one yells, I know, I know., I know….lets honor and name a few stages after a doping cheating drug addict…..Bravo, bravo they all yell !@#$$

I don’t understand what is to gain or promote here. Are they that desperate or just plain stupid? (i'm going with option 2)I know US and it’s fans holds athletes to a certain standard and expectation (Note I said expectation) but to honor a cheating drug addict after the recent incident….C’mon man. This is a bad dream and I just can’t wake up.

Are the Giro organizers confusing Pantani with Tom Simpson, or trying to?

So we should boycot watching Pirates of the Carribean cause they were a looting, raping, stealing bunch?

Come on.

I don't see the problem with honoring Pantani. As you said everyone speaks well of Tom Simpson now. Pantani was sacrificed. I see no reason to hate on him.

Typical response from across the pond.  My thought process worked like that when I was in my mid 20’s. Back in the 80’s there were rumors about Bijorn Borg doping but I didn't want to hear it nor did I care. He was awesome to watch but I got older and my morals changed..

The point is Mr Pin0Q0, we glorify/romantisize a lot of things in society at large that are just plain wrong if you think of it.

If you apply the same anglosaxon/germanic protestant morals to the world at large as you do to cycling, then suddenly the world does not make much sense.

Nothing particularly 20s about that.

Rock n roll. Enjoy the show.

(and I am not across the pond; look the other way -> west)

/Pantani was sacrificed./

Agreed. Hopefully his memory as a competitor will be honored appropriately.

On another thread, someone mentioned cycling as having one leg in the past, and another in the future. They are linked, to be sure, and Pantani was one of the more compelling links to the recent past.

And Pirates of the Carrib? I didn't see that just because it was over-the-top campy. Depp got his comeuppance as 'Tonto', as I understand.

Pin0Q0 you can't be seriously upset. Yes there is no Santa. Don't mean you can't still enjoy the holiday.

Nope, I am going to disagree with you dream weaving fun seeking, fantasy believing bunch, that's not how I am wired. I never had any interest in wrestling because I knew it was fake, XMASS has been commercialized and the only enjoyable thing about is 12/26 and have little tolerance for liars and cheats, so no it’s not rock’n roll to me but country music…..start pedaling I hear banjo?

Pin - try using punctuation. It would help when trying to read your posts.

You sure do live in a glass house. Your comments about Pantani are amazingly callous and you should be ashamed of yourself. It's not like you've never done anything wrong. He was simply trying to ride on a level playing field. But beyond that, the guy suffered from depression, poor self-image, addiction, etc. Take any sample of a group and you're bound to have someone that has these issues. Frank Vandenbrouck was another that had to deal with his own demons. The fact is that the media killed Pantani. He was used as a scapegoat and sacrificial lamb. Combine that kind of negative attention with the mental issues he was dealing with and you have a recipe for disaster. Pantani was no better or worse of a person than any of us, so who are you to judge and say such horrible things?

6ix nails it.

At the end of the day, Pantani is still incredibly popular in Italy. The Giro, in a bit of a crisis right now, is looking to maximize tiffosi appeal right now.

End if story.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

"He was simply trying to ride on a level playing field." EEEEK! There is a very long list of racers who can have that put after their name.

Pin should be ashamed of himself... for stating facts and giving his opinion? Give me a break.

I absolutely understand honoring Panatani and have no problems with it. I am actually glad they will do it. I even go so far as to think it is good for cycling's image and psyche right now. So, I absolutely disagree with Pin. But I somehow fail to see how Pin should be ashamed of himself.

As to punctuation, in reviewing Pins' posts, I see several periods, a number of commas, some ellipses, and even some .... I guess that is an ellipse followed by a period. There is definitely a quantity of punctuation. I am not sure I am qualified to assess the quality.

CK - I don't think it has anything to do with the Giro's crisis (if someone running away with a bunch of money is that)...more likely it being the 10th anniversary of Pantani's death in 2014.

Doesn't celebrating the anniversary of someone's death seem a little ghoulish?

strikes me as a case of the italians seeking to salve their conscience after really turning on him once his PED usage hit the surface. the italian authorities had him on the perp walk on numerous occasions, and his trials were circuses, exacerbating his descent into non-PED drug use and depression.

i'm of the opinion that two wrongs don't make a right.

It is people like this that we should be honoring, celebrating and talking about not fantasized egomaniacs that think the Universe revolves around them.

''When people were telling him 'Gino, you're a hero,''' Andrea Bartali said, ''he would reply, 'No, no. I want to be remembered for my sporting achievements. Real heroes are others, those who have suffered in their soul, in their heart, in their spirit, in their mind, for their loved ones. Those are the real heroes. I'm just a cyclist.'''

Despite the howlings emanating from the Hypocrisy Police, Pantani was a tortured soul who wore his flaws on his sleeve. He was the troubled everyman who flew too close to the sun in search of fame, fortune and adulation.

People relate to that moreso than some amoral shill in search of new revenue steams to enhance his corporate stature.

The difference should be clear.

If you can't ascertain the difference it's only because you don't want to.

Berzin, you made it muddier!

They both wanted to win that is clear.
