Rogers tests positive

You would think they could at least come up with a new reason.

One would think that teammates would also test positive then too. Unless no other teammates were at that event or did not eat the same food or were not tested. But yeah "Come on son".

Let's just play this out. Team sits down to a dinner with tainted meat. All partake. Next day, a random test is made. They pick Rogers because he was considered a likely suspect. (L'Equipe rated him 7 out of 10 for likely dopers 2 years before.) He tests positive. No on else on the team tests positive because no one else was tested.

Or, say he podiumed. Automatic test. He shows positive. No one else on the team podiumed or were tested. (A most likely scenario.)

For both scenarios, only Rogers was tested and in both cases, the meat in question was either eaten or went out with the garbage. (Can you imagine a team cook saving meat samples until after all potential test were made and the results came back? I suspect both DSs and health officials would object!)

This is not a defense of Rogers. More of an open question about the food industries of the world, many of which have engaged in practices that would not meet rigorous challenge and have affected people eating that food in a number of un-intended ways..

On the other hand Ben, Team goes to China where suspect practices are used in food preparation including clenbuterol fed beef. Team does not pre select or vet the food before hand? Or bring their own? Or keep samples?

Except AC got popped for clen when he was riding for Astana. Saxo Bank had no involvement in that case.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Andy, I suspect that monitoring the food supply and keeping samples is right about with insurance for ream priorities. Feeding a dozen race horses their huge piles of food is a much higher priority. Their is also rider moral. They are racing in China. You mean they can't eat the local food? That they have to stick to what has been brought in the freezer? (And getting that freezer to China, Japan and home would be a fun task for some sucker.)

Wouldn't it make far more sense for an organization that wants to "globalize" to write their rules so the employees can eat local food with risking their jobs? UCI can write any rules they want. There is no effective rider's union (and I don't see the union that does exist having any problem with a reasonable threshold for common food contaminates).

Until I hear of cases where riders are testing positive with enough clembuterol to make any difference at all in performance, I am solidly in with the riders. This is a bad rule and could be made good very easily.

I don't care. The fact is that the employees that do all the work to make $$s for everyone are not at the table. UCI can blame WADA for the rules, but UCI can also stand up to WADA and say "hey, this doesn't work".

Granted, in the past, UCI's behavior with regard to drugs, testing and implementation left a lot to be desired and their standing with WADA was often shaky. UCI now has the opportunity to a few new leaves with their new leader of some real credibility.

Well Ben you should care. I would make the point that cycling isn't served with kneejerk reactions from its fans to blame the UCI for every ailment.

This one rests squarely on WADA. The shortcomings of its clen enforcement were pointed out during the Contador case but WADA decided to stand their ground (and reiterated this again with the new cases). And lets face it WADA isn't a hair better than the UCI, the only way they can justify their exististence is through pursuit of of cycling; otherwise they are a hopelessly powerless bunch.

And yes, cyclists need a union for the sanity of the sport. But again, that is not in UCI's court although they could certainly help (as opposed to pursuiing the TRC that is doomed to fail).

UCI was in no position to argue with WADA with its old regime in place. They can and should now. And they should do this hand in hand with the union.

Definitely depressing when you have to consider eating local food in China would cause you to come up dirty on a drug test.

Overall though, it's just depressing how complex, industrialized, and bizarre the world food system has become.

I'm still paranoid about Pink Slime that is used as filler for ground beef here is US, (Goggle it if you don’t know what it is), suppliers, restaurants and grocery stores say they have stopped using it but can you believe what they tell you ……and we are not much better that the Chinese. FDA has recommended that animal feed providers here in US eliminate anti-biotic from their feed. The drug is a hormone that speeds up and bulks up the growth of animals as well as fight diseases but also is responsible for over 20k deaths every year. The key here is recommended not made mandatory yet because 20k deaths is not a significant number.
