Dear forumites,
I'm worried that I might have violated regulations. My daughter and I have a 12 year tradition of camping out every winter. Last night we may have set a record at -8F. While we are pleased with our record we did use chemical hand warmers and placed a mason jar full of boiling water in the bottom of each sleeping bag. Will this disqualify us from the record?
Since our ancestors did not use chemical warmers or high tech tents but did sleep next to a fire it really does not seem like cheating. We wore base layers and hoodies where they used buffalo fur robes so I really think they may have had an advantage.
All these technical advances have me quite confused. Should we have a Robert Falcon Scott category similar to an Merckx category?
Am I in deep trouble with the UCI? Will they go easier on me if I fess up and call them?

Our ancestors used the best technology available to them at the time.....do you think they would have eschewed their furs and skins for a moisture wicking wool and Gore-tex given the opportunity, or stayed with them out of a sense of "tradition"?

I think your daughter will forever cherish her relationship with her father which in turn will reap the benefits to her children, one day and forever down the line. UCI be damned.  |

As a competitor in the free for all Masters category you should not sweat it too much.
Your daughter is another matter, she's lost for life as a real-deal outdoor camper. 
Remember, it is all in the education 
BTW, was this a bike camping trip or why else would UCI be involved?  |

C.K. "...eschewed their furs and skins for a moisture wicking wool and Gore-tex..." Swapping buffalo fur for modern synthetics? When it is way too cold for moisture? I think they would look at the modern synthetics in askance and say "no thanks".
But when it rains? Different story. In fact a fun one: 1975 my college roommate and I drove the West, camping. We had a variety of tarps and plastic sheets to improvise with. For the most part, they worked well, forming some very different shelters for very different climates. We spent one night in Bellingham Washington. At around 4 am, it started raining hard and we awoke deep in a cold puddle of water. But, we awoke 2 hours apart. My friend had a good quality though older down bag. Warm. I had the brand new "Hollowfill" mummy bag, as minimal as I could get away with for a week long ride in Wisconsin in October (which I had just done prior to this trip). My friend awoke at 4 am, wet and cold, Sleep was done for the night. I awoke with the early light around six and discovered my bag was soaked. But I slept. And it wasn't too bad damp the next night. (But we did drive 100 miles east where it was MUCH dryer!)
That experience really impressed me. In the wet, the modern stuff is a blessing! But dry? Comes down to weight and what you are wiling to spend to save it. Now, for me, there is also my allergies. the good modern stuff is a much surer bet for me. (Thank you Patagonia and Malden Mills, the original maker of the Polar fabrics for making really good fabrics I can wear!)

| there is a reason nobody lived long back then. Alcohol and respiratory disease. They would have cooped up with their wool, furs, barrel of whiskey and a nice smoldering fire |
