An emotional owner pointed out what I have thought for years: why can horses skip races in the triple crown? In cycling terms, it would be like skipping stages in the TdF. I agree that a horse should have to run all three.

With that said, I admit that I don't have any connection to horse racing other than I watch the three biggies every year, and I went to a few races at Churchill Downs when I was stationed at Ft. Knox, KY. Even though I didn't actually attend the KY Derby ($$$) I enjoyed the festivities surrounding it.

Because the triple crown is only for 3 year olds.

Yes, all three races are only for three year old thoroughbreds, but the question is should they be able to skip races? Or as CC's owner said:
"If you don't make enough points to get into the Kentucky Derby, you [shouldn't] run in the other two races. ... It's all or nothing..."

Unlike a stage race they are 3 big individual races. Not every horse owner is interested in the triple and not very horse is so able to win on all 3 courses.
If My horse excels at belmont but never fairs well at the Preakness should I have to enter all 3? This is part of what makes the triple so hard to win. Disappointed owners notwithstanding I am OK with it as it is. The triple is only recognition of how rare a horse can win all 3 when each event might have a fresher horse racing. It also make the odds even more difficult.

A better analogy to bike racing than the stage races would be winning, say, E3, Flanders and P-R but with no team tactics, every man for himself. Now,if everyone at P-R had to race E3 and Flanders first, P-R could have a pretty small field.

Its not important enough to me to do the research, but I wonder if the 11 other triple crown winners ran against fresh horses? I don't remember it happening until in the '80s, but it could have been going on all along for all I know.

I don't know 79, those races aren't linked by a title like "triple Crown".

A better comparison would be an omnium, wouldn't it?

The triple crown is indeed an omnium. This is what makes it great. Only the best of the best can stave off the challenges to earn the title of a triple crown winner. It is suppose to be difficult. To make it less so, would demean the value of it. For what it is worth, the stud fees for a triple crown winner are much greater. No wonder the owner was ticked.

jm, I suspect the term Triple Crown came well after the inception of those three different races and probably not unlit a horse actually won all three. Like "threepeat" wasn't a word until Michael Jordon did it.

Sorry this is the rules guy in me speaking.
not an omnium. that is 3 events. this is a race of differing distances. on the track that is Team sprint, sprint ( almost) and events based on laps rather than distance. Sprint is qualified over 200 meters but race is over distance that varies a little on different tracks. Team sprint is 3 laps but on what ever the track size is. In Fonthill it is 167 meters, Burnaby 200, Carson City 250 and here is 333. and there are 400 and 500 meter tracks too.
Quite different races. I can do the first lap of the 167

79, the guy on ESPN said that the Triple Crown started in 1919, and got the trophy in 195? (I don't remember the exact year in the '50s). I don't know the dates, but I think that the races started in the mid 1800s. I assume that horses only ran their home races. Maybe the first horse to run all three, won all three, and that's what started it.

jookey, you are probably correct, the owner will lose a few mil$. The owner of Seattle Slew lives in Sun Valley so he does a lot of local radio stuff around the time of the triple crown. He said that Slew bread 51 mares, but now a good thoroughbred will bread 100-150 mares so CC's owners won't go broke.
