I am a certified line judge OC. At the youth level, I would call that foul. Any touching like that in the box and I am pointing to the penalty kick spot.
At the World Cup, in the round of 16...I will let the players decide the game and swallow my whistle on that call. |

These are certified world cup judges Keith, big difference with reffing a kid's game (which can be challenging enough as it is with parents on sideline; I know this because I am on executive of our soccer club and get to deal with these situations all the time).
Robben put the Mexican defense to shame; played the ball and was about to go after it. Marquez made the stupid mistake of sticking his foot out in his own 16 without any attempt to play the ball. Obstruction, tripping, whatever you want to call it, that's a penalty. The ref made the call and that's the end of story.
This was the second stupid mistake Marquez made, his first came in first half, the double assault by him and Moreno on Robben inside the Mexican 16. Marquez even admits that moment in the first half should have been a penalty. Not only that, the stupid Moreno assault which saw him break his own leg should have been a red. What happened in the second half was a logical consequence of the ref not making the right call in the first half. Crap like that needs to be weeded out, starting at the youth level. The way I see it the Orange were denied a penalty, not gifted one. Game should have been over right there.

2nd half; Marquez, no attempt to play the ball, attempt to foul opponent, the rules are clear, you should know this.
You shallow your call, guys like Robben, Messi etc will be kicked out of existence by guys like Moreno. |

Note to World Cup refs:
Try to be more consistent and suck less.
Also call the first half penalty against Robbin you missed, give van Persie a yellow for his ridiculous jersey grab, and give Robben a yellow for each flop. |

So why don't they have more officials on the field where acting doesn't need to come into play to equalize a missed call earlier in the match?

That was my point. I would call any contact in a kids game in the box in that situation. At the level this game was at, unless it was denying a scoring chance or the contact was such that an injury could have occurred or the player was ACTUALLY brought to ground as opposed to falling after a trip that any elite athlete could run though, I am not making the call.
You have to be consistent at the World Cup level in my opinion OC. If you are not going to call the first one, don't blow a "make up call" that late in the second half.
And RvP is very quietly one of the dirtiest players in int'l soccer. He gets away with it because he is pretty. |

It's not a makeup call Keith and this is why you are not reffing at World Cup level. Obstruction in box equals penalty, scoring chance or not. You should know this. You are making lame excuses for poor decision on Marquez end. Robben sold it well, sure, but the foul was made. Doesn't matter if Robben was going to score or not. Heck, my first reaction was "is this a penalty?"; then I watched the replay couple times, ref made the right call.
The stuff RvP does, look these are game at edge of a knife, its no place for the meek. If you are going to call that you might as well send both teams off.
The ref overall did a pretty good job of guiding that game. By comparison, the Greece - Costa Rica game was an out of control rain of fouls and cards. Unwatchable. |

Dale - simple answer, it sells. Look at all the headlines today. Why do you think half the planet is tuning in? This controversial stuff between countries is what keeps soccer as the greatest game on earth alive.
Why doesn't hockey combat needless violence in the ring? It sells.
Why doesn't cycling do a better job of weeding out doping? Spectacular mountain stages sell.
Why doesn't football do a better job of weeding out concussions? Spectacular impact play sells.
Why does baseball not weed out steroid use? Homers sell.
Every sport has its own daemons.

The horrible substitute refs in the NFL a few years ago garnered a lot of headlines but it sure wasn't good for the game.
I'll give you that the officiating created a lot of headlines but I'd rather the news be about great playing, not piss poor acting necessitated by a lack of officials. |

| Its a minor storm in the glass of water that is social media Dale. If you read some of the neutral and more informed media, you'll realize the Mexican coach sealed their fate midway through 2nd half, taking out their one true forward that could have kept the Dutch defense honest and opening the way for the Dutch to play full on offense, leading to 10 corners in the span of 15 (?) minutes. The spectucular Mexican goalie is the only thing that kept them alive and for a while it looked like he was unbeatable. That's what the game was about, poor versus kickass substitutions turned things around. The rest is just a bunch of whining. |

The World Cup can be glorious for many reasons. On Sunday it stepped up to educate viewers.
Arjen Robben was fouled in the box deep into added time in the match against Mexico.
The key word in that sentence is 'fouled.'
Defender Rafa Marquez stepped in and stood on the foot of Robben in the penalty area. At no level of this sport, from youth football to the World Cup, is a defender allowed to step on an opponent's foot. None.
It was a clear penalty. 100 times out of 100 a referee should give it.
Terrible.
How could Rafael Marquez have been so reckless?
He is 35 years old. He has been playing for the Mexico national team since 1997. He has 124 caps, has captained the team in four World Cups. He started in central defense and won the UEFA Champions League with FC Barcelona. He should know how to play the game by now. So why would he stick out his leg on an obviously belated challenge when Netherlands star Arjen Robben was about to lose control of the ball?
Robben made the smart play as Marquez made the wrong one.Marquez knew what the repercussions might be when he stuck out his leg. If he did not get the ball, he might get Robben. He wasn’t even close to the ball. So what was he doing? He was bringing a terrible end to a magnificent World Cup game, and probably to his own great World Cup career. That’s a shame, but it’s on him. |

| We get it, it was the proper call. It's the context that riles. Some many other much worse fouls not called, i.e., the laws of soccer are situational. Embellishments, jersey grabbing, cheap shots when the ref's head is turned are part of the game but do not endear soccer to Americans. |

| Read the second article again LSD; its only in your minds that soccer is somehow different. There are other reasons why the game doesn't make it past the youth level. Don't make excuses. Come on, how much dirty play doesn't get called in hockey, why are there so many concussions in football. A little bit of a reality check please. |
