Is there really a difference between a $400 mattress and a $1,000-2,000 mattress? I hate mattress shopping, but its time. I know everyone has a different "feel" preference, but is there really a $1K difference? The 10 year old mattress that is failing my comfort test was $350 on clearance (maybe $700 reg.), and until recently was great.

Not sure to tell you the truth. Just be sure to buy from a place that has an exchange policy.

A couple years ago my wife talked me into buying one of those foam mattress' that are supposed to be all that and a bag of chips and I don't think it's all that great. Certainly not better than our previous coil and spring mattress that was less than half the cost.

I started sleeping on 4" firm foam in my 20s. When I moved to Seattle, I bought a mattress, then another. Went back to that old piece of foam and it was a big improvement. Then futons for my married years. When that ended, I took the 4" foam from the futon and cut it down to full size. But I've noticed I now bruise sleeping on foam that firm, though my back loves it. So I added 2" of medium foam. Then 2" of soft foam. My "mattress" now is one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on. (There have been two hotels stays I have done on beds that were to die for, but this set-up is very close.)

And total cost? The 4" piece would probably cost $200. The 2" pieces might have cost me $250 total. All cut to measure by a local foam supplier. Add a nice, padded mattress cover from Ross ($25?) and I get to sleep in real comfort.

Foam isn't the prettiest landfill material, so it isn't great. Most mattresses include enough foam and synthetics that they don't break down so well either. (I composted all the cotton from my futon. My earthworms were sleeping in style!)

I just went through this process and researched it to the nth degree.
Is spending more worth it? Yes. Maybe.

Usually much more durable, so you won't be shopping for a new one as soon.
More $$ can get you good latex foam, which a lot of people like a lot.
The memory foam versions are great for some but hot and too soft for me, and hard to use for activities other than sleeping (not to spell it out!)
It's hard to lie on a mattress for a few minutes in a store and extrapolate to what it would be like to live with it in your home.
Mattresses are as personal as saddles.
The satisfaction surveys put the sleep number and latex foam mattresses at the top, with memory foam next. But what most people like may not be what you like.
FWIW, if you have healthy back store, check it out.
The sleep number models might make sense if you and your partner have very different preferences.
Last thought: as we get older, a but more plush on top is worth it. May not apply to you. A latex foam topper is a cheaper way to get that effect.

We bought a Tempur-Pedic last year at Sleep Train. We love it. They sleep a little bit warm, but we have a ceiling fan in our bedroom which is on most the time during the summer.

My daughter and son-in-law bought a memory foam-coil combination. Can't remember which brand, but they like theirs. A lot cheaper. Tempur-Pedics are kinda pricy.

Sleep By Number bed. Hear me now, believe me later. ESPECIALLY if you and your wife / sleeping partner can't agree on a firm vs soft mattress.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

CK, customizing each side is easy with foam. Get the total thickness to match and the sides can still be very different.

we've had our same bed for 15 years maybe? we talk about getting a new one but neither one of us has trouble sleeping on the mattress. we flip it every couple of years but it probably doesn't make any difference. i think we paid $300 for it from a local mattress maker. some of the most comfortable beds i've ever slept on were in europe. super firm foam that i would be willing to try at home but that would require a new bed frame. people slept on the ground or on straw forever.
How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.
