I just stumbled on my Bonnie Raitt (self titled) album, her breakthrough 1971. I spent a blue weekend at a friend's getting over a breakup and getting to know that album. Couldn't buy it (or even listen to it for many years after. Finally picked it up in the '80s.
This morning I stumbled on it and played it. What an album! Recorded near live in a leisurely setting on a four track. Very good but mostly no name musicians. (Junior Wells and AC Porter were there, but they came for the fishing and happened to bring their axes.) No egos, no show-offs. Just really good music! And Bonnie Raitt? What a voice, what a delivery!
This simple little album is completely the real deal. Why has it been so long since i played it? (I forgot years ago who the woman was that I was so blue about 40 years ago!)
Edit: Warner Brothers WS 1953

I'll have to check it out, Ben.
I've been on a Son House and Lead Belly kick for the past couple of months. Also Chulahoma: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough from The Black Keys. I actually have to force myself not to listen to it repetitively. For fear of losing the joy of hearing "Meet me in the city" and "My mind is rambling".

I was in grad school in the Chicago area when that album came out. It got lots of play on "The Midnight Special", a late Saturday night radio program on WFMT, which played classical music the rest of the time. She richly deserves all the success she's achieved since then.

Had bought tickets to an upcoming BR concert at the U of A months in advance of the show. That night came and went. About a week after the date of the show my brother asks, so how was Bonnie Raitt? DOH! He never lets me live that one down.

Spud, I got lucky. I was in Ann Arbor in 1986 and regularly going to the Arc Coffeehouse, an acoustic music venue that started around 1970 in a church. (I saw Norman Blake, a phenomenal Nashville studio guitarist who's played for everybody, there in '73.) Saw that Bonnie Raitt was coming. I went and got to see her in a tiny place. There were 115 of us (sellout and biggest date yet in the new venue), each paying $15 to see her. She showed up with just her bass player. She looked weary, like the road was getting old and we knew she had a big show the next night in Chicago. So we did not get to see her when she was "on". But the real treat was that we got to see her in a place she really wanted to be. For her, the Arc was like coming home, This was the venue that supported her many years before when she was struggling. It was with deep gratitude, she was there and it showed.
