it's been 20 years since i've written a resume. my job isn't professional, more technical so i've just jumped from job to job without one. any good templates or suggestions?

Since you have a lot of experience, list the skills and experience you have that are appropriate to the job. Unless you are in academia keep it to one page.

Tailor the resume to whatever job you are applying for. The first half page of your resume should convey the message that you're the guy for the job. No one is going to read down to page 4 or 6 unless you really peak their interest from line 1.

The fact that you've jumped from job to job may be a red flag to some; it always is to me. "Oh this guy is only going to stay with us for a year". So it is something you will want to address.

my bad on the phrasing. i've only had 3 jobs in 20 years so i haven't really been jumping from job to job. i was told to keep the resume simple and put it on nice paper. now that they get emailed do you add any decorative graphics or color or anything? cover letter?

3 jobs in 20 years, that's a green flag :-)

In my line of work we're just interested in words + experience on resume; graphics would be frowned upon but it could very well be different depending on what world you're operating in. Can;t comment.

Cover letter should be short and sweet and bring home why you're interested in the job. If the job has key experience or other requirements, try to address how you meet them without using too many words.

Add a keywords section at the end of the document that matches the jargon in the job description. If you don't have an "in" to get you to the top of the pile, the keywords will at least get you through the computer scan/screen. It sounds and looks goofy, but the computer is the first line of sorting for candidates.

State your experience as action-result, not just a list of projects.

Employment coach also recommended linkedin. When you know of a job, you should make contact with the in-house recruiter. You can contact the hiring manager too. Every little bit helps. It definitely helped for me. The company I work for seemed to have a revolving door for their in-house recruiter but they were also relying heavily on them to bring people in. Keeping track of the recruiter and pestering them helped to get them moving. Make sure you come off as motivated.

Resume components:
Header with name/contact information
Experience (jobs in reverse chronological order) with title and highlights of responsibilities
Education (degree(s)/major-minor, schools (no years), special relevant courses or on-the-job training)
Skills
Community Service

As others have said, tailor the resume to specific job application. Extra details can be included in the cover letter. Do not discuss salary requirements in the cover letter or resume.

After you compose the resume in Word, save as a .pdf for submission. Do not scan into a .pdf because it is not searchable for key words.

I think that smokey's summary is good but others have added some good points as well. Its kind of a crap shoot what gets someone's attention. GOOD LUCK!
